IPL 2026 Roster Updates: Strategic Moves for RCB and CSK

As the IPL 2026 season progresses, franchises continue to refine their squads to ensure depth and cover for unforeseen absences. In a pair of significant developments, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have confirmed new signings to address gaps in their respective bowling line-ups.

Richard Gleeson Joins RCB Ranks

Royal Challengers Bengaluru have officially announced the signing of English fast bowler Richard Gleeson. The 38-year-old pacer joins the squad as a replacement for Sri Lankan sling-action bowler Nuwan Thushara. The acquisition, valued at INR 1.6 crore, brings significant experience to the RCB dugout.

Gleeson is no stranger to the intensity of the IPL. With nine T20 International appearances for England under his belt, he has previously been associated with two other heavyweight franchises. He featured in two matches for the Chennai Super Kings in 2024 and made a lone appearance for the Mumbai Indians during the 2025 season. His ability to deliver tight spells and pick up crucial wickets makes him a seasoned professional addition for RCB’s campaign.

The Nuwan Thushara Situation

The departure of Nuwan Thushara from the RCB setup follows a series of complicated administrative hurdles. Initially signed by RCB for INR 1.6 crore ahead of the 2025 season—a year that culminated in a title-winning run for the franchise—Thushara was retained for 2026. However, his participation was halted when Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) denied him the necessary No-Objection Certificate (NOC).

Reports indicate that the denial was rooted in the bowler failing to meet the fitness standards mandated by SLC. The situation escalated briefly when Thushara initiated legal action against the board, although he later withdrew the petition and submitted a formal written apology. In his initial legal filing, Thushara expressed a desire to retire from international cricket, though the long-term status of that intention remains a subject of speculation within the cricketing fraternity.

CSK Bolsters Pace Attack with Kuldip Yadav

While RCB dealt with administrative shifts, the Chennai Super Kings were forced into a replacement move due to injury. The franchise has signed Indian fast bowler Kuldip Yadav as an injury replacement for Khaleel Ahmed.

Khaleel Ahmed’s 2026 campaign was cut short after he sustained a right quadricep injury during a match against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). In his five appearances this season, Khaleel managed to claim two wickets with an economy rate of 8.67. With the left-arm seamer ruled out, CSK has moved quickly to secure Kuldip Yadav for INR 30 lakh.

Kuldip, a right-arm quick, brings prior IPL experience to the yellow jersey, having represented the Rajasthan Royals (RR) across the 2021 and 2023 seasons, where he made three appearances. The team management will be looking to him to provide stability in the final overs as the tournament enters its critical stages.

Implications for the Tournament

These mid-season adjustments highlight the volatile nature of the IPL, where a single injury or administrative hurdle can force teams to rethink their bowling strategies overnight. For RCB, the inclusion of Gleeson is an attempt to maintain the momentum of their title defense. For CSK, the addition of Kuldip Yadav is a pragmatic move to fill a void left by a key contributor. As the race for the playoffs intensifies, the performance of these replacement players could prove pivotal in the final league standings.
