Since making his debut in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has been nothing short of a revelation. In a league where seasoned internationals often struggle to maintain consistency, Sooryavanshi has exceeded all expectations and silenced the skepticism that typically surrounds teenage prodigies. During his initial outing in IPL 2025, he amassed over 250 runs, a campaign highlighted by a stunning century and a half-century that signaled the arrival of a special talent.

However, his journey to the top began long before the glitz and glamour of the IPL. Sooryavanshi has been a cornerstone of India’s youth cricket setup across all formats. He played a pivotal role in India’s triumphant 2024 U19 World Cup campaign. His performance in the final remains etched in memory, where he scored a brutal 175 runs, completely demoralizing the England U19 bowling attack and propelling India to a massive total exceeding 400 runs. This ability to perform on the biggest stage has defined his early career.

Dominating IPL 2026: Overcoming the ‘Second-Season Blues’

Entering the IPL 2026 season, many cricket pundits and analysts speculated whether Sooryavanshi would fall victim to the ‘second-season blues.’ The theory was that opposition teams, equipped with extensive video analysis and data, would have identified his technical flaws and weaknesses. Instead of regressing, Sooryavanshi took his game to an even more intimidating level.

Representing the Rajasthan Royals, the left-handed opener has hammered 440 runs in just 11 games. His statistics are a testament to his modern-day approach: a staggering strike rate of 236.56 accompanied by 40 towering sixes. The highlight of his season was a breathtaking century against Sunrisers Hyderabad, reached in just 36 balls. This feat stands as the third-fastest century in IPL history, falling just one ball short of his own record-breaking 35-ball ton set in the 2025 season. Such consistency in power-hitting has made him the most feared opener in the current circuit.

Ravi Shastri’s Verdict: The Door is Three-Fourths Open

The clamor for Sooryavanshi’s inclusion in the senior national side has reached a crescendo, with former India head coach Ravi Shastri leading the charge. Speaking on the ICC Review, Shastri emphasized that age should not be a barrier for a player of Sooryavanshi’s caliber. Shastri believes the T20 format is the ideal gateway to integrate such explosive talent into the national setup.

“The door would be three-fourths open. I can tell you that, for sure, because if you want to encourage or get someone young and into the setup as quickly as possible, then it’s the T20 format of the game,” Shastri remarked. He further added that Sooryavanshi is not lacking in any department and could currently walk into many international sides based on his form and the ‘exuberance of youth’ that he brings to the crease.

A Potential Debut in Ireland

While the next ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is scheduled for 2028, Shastri suggests that India should not wait to blood their young star. He pointed toward the upcoming tour of Ireland in June as the perfect opportunity. India is scheduled to play two T20Is in Ireland, followed by a more demanding five-match T20I series in England. Shastri views the Ireland series as a strategic entry point for Sooryavanshi to become India’s youngest player.

Dismissing concerns about his age, Shastri noted: “A lot of people will ask, is he 15? Is he 16? Is he 14? I don’t care. I just see the way he is batting at the moment and the way he’s taking on all comers twice his age or maybe two and a half times his age. It doesn’t matter to him. I think he’s very, very much in the reckoning.”

The Roadmap: India A and Beyond

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has already initiated the process of grooming Sooryavanshi for higher honors. The opener has been named in the India A squad, led by Tilak Varma, for an upcoming trip to Sri Lanka. This tour features an ODI tri-series involving Afghanistan A and is set to take place in June.

This call-up is a clear indication that the national selectors view him as a multi-format prospect. As he prepares to don the India A colors, the transition to the senior side feels inevitable. Whether it happens in the green fields of Ireland or later in the English summer, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is undoubtedly the next big chapter in Indian cricket history.
