Only three bowlers have conquered Chepauk with ODI five-fors

The Spin-Friendly Fortress of Chennai

Fast bowlers have rarely dominated One-Day Internationals at the iconic MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Traditionally, the surface at Chepauk has rewarded spinners with its turn and grip, while pace bowlers have often had to rely on extreme discipline, patience, and defensive lines to get through their overs. On a scorching Saturday, however, Indian speedster Prasidh Krishna turned that long-standing trend completely on its head with a spell of fast bowling that will be remembered for generations.

Producing a sensational performance against Afghanistan, Krishna returned astonishing figures of 5/23 to register the best-ever bowling figures in ODI history at Chepauk. In doing so, he shattered a record that had stood untouched for nearly 15 years, proving that genuine pace and precision can overcome even the most spin-conducive wickets.

Prasidh Krishna Sets a New Benchmark

Coming into the third ODI of the bilateral series, India had already sealed the series victory. While many expected a low-intensity dead rubber, Prasidh Krishna ensured the match would carve its own permanent place in the cricket history books. From his very first over, he never allowed Afghanistan’s batters to settle, utilizing his height and high release point to extract steep bounce and movement.

His final spell of 5/23 eclipsed West Indian fast bowler Ravi Rampaul’s 5/51 recorded against India back in 2011. It now stands as the finest individual bowling performance ever witnessed in an ODI at Chennai. Remarkably, this historic feat marks only the third five-wicket haul in ODI history at Chepauk, highlighting just how rare such a milestone is for bowlers at this venue.

In the Words of the Record-Breaker

Reflecting on his historic spell during the mid-innings break, a exhausted yet delighted Prasidh Krishna shared his thoughts on the challenging conditions.

“Really happy to be coming in on a hot day, bowling that well, helping the team, so pretty happy now,” Krishna stated.

When asked if there had been a conscious effort to adjust his lengths and bowl fuller to maximize his impact on the Chennai surface, the fast bowler acknowledged the continuous grind behind the scenes.

“Yes, the work’s been going on for quite some time now. I would say we’ve been working really hard on length all over the place, be it whatever format I’m playing. And it’s nice to see things coming off, and definitely Morne’s really been in my ears for quite some time now, and I’m happy to be bowling well today.”

The intense Chennai heat clearly took its toll on the players, and when asked by the presenter if he had actively pushed to bowl his sixth over or if he was completely “cooked” by that stage, Krishna smiled and admitted to the physical drain.

“No, honestly, I was really, really tired. It was pretty hot, but no complaints. I did end up bowling the fifth one, got the fourth wicket there. But the more important thing for us to turn up on a hot day to put out that performance on the field, really good.”

The Elite Club: Chepauk’s Pacing Pioneers

Before Prasidh Krishna’s extraordinary performance, only two other bowlers in the history of One-Day Internationals had managed to claim a five-wicket haul at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. Both of them were also pace bowlers who defied the spin-friendly reputation of the track.

The first bowler to enter this exclusive bracket was Pakistan’s fast-bowling maestro Aaqib Javed. During the 1997 Pepsi Independence Cup, Javed tore through the Indian batting lineup to finish with figures of 5/61, setting the initial benchmark at the ground.

Fourteen years later, during the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup, West Indies pacer Ravi Rampaul produced a memorable spell of 5/51 against India, bettering Javed’s long-standing record. Rampaul’s feat remained the gold standard at Chepauk for a decade and a half until Krishna’s modern-day masterclass rewrote the record books entirely.

The Illustrious List of Chepauk ODI Five-Fors

With Krishna’s recent exploits, the updated and highly exclusive list of ODI five-wicket hauls at the MA Chidambaram Stadium now stands as follows:

  • 5/23 – Prasidh Krishna vs Afghanistan (2026)
  • 5/51 – Ravi Rampaul vs India (2011)
  • 5/61 – Aaqib Javed vs India (1997)

This legendary trio remains the only pacers to have unlocked the secret to success on one of India’s most challenging tracks, sealing their names forever in Chennai cricket folklore.
