The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) recently named Muqeem in a 28-member training camp scheduled at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Lahore, taking place from May 15 to May 21. Beyond this development, the youngster is firmly in the conversation for a spot in the Pakistan squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia on home soil.
By choosing to be available for national duties, Muqeem is signaling that his immediate focus remains on reclaiming his place in the senior international side, rather than venturing abroad for franchise leagues.
A Prolific PSL 2026 Campaign
This decision is underscored by the exceptional form Muqeem displayed during the most recent PSL 2026 season. As a key architect in the Peshawar Zalmi franchise’s title-winning run, the spinner emerged as one of the most dangerous bowlers in the tournament. In 11 appearances, he claimed a remarkable 22 wickets at an impressive average of 14.40. His performance was so dominant that it earned him both the ‘Bowler of the Tournament’ and the prestigious ‘Player of the Series’ honors.
Despite his domestic dominance, Muqeem has not featured in an international match since September 2025. Given his recent accolades, it is understandable that he wishes to ensure he is physically and tactically prepared should the selectors call upon him for the Australian series.
Derbyshire’s Strategic Pivot
With Muqeem opting out, Derbyshire has acted swiftly to maintain their roster strength. The club has announced the signing of Pakistan fast bowler Akif Javed as his replacement for the 2026 T20 Blast. Interestingly, Javed was also a participant in the aforementioned Lahore training camp, but unlike Muqeem, he is currently not in contention for the upcoming ODI series, allowing him the flexibility to join the English club.
Meanwhile, the situation has also shifted for Mohammad Ghazanfar. Originally slated to join the Derbyshire squad after the conclusion of their first six matches due to his IPL 2026 obligations with the Mumbai Indians, the Afghanistan spinner may now arrive earlier than anticipated. Following the early exit of the Mumbai Indians from the IPL playoff race, there is a possibility that Ghazanfar could integrate into the Derbyshire setup as early as their fourth match of the tournament.
