IPL 2026 RR vs LSG Match 64 Highlights: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi 93 Keeps Playoff Hopes Alive
The 15-Year-Old Prodigy Steals the Show in Jaipur
The Indian Premier League has always been a breeding ground for extraordinary young talent, but what transpired at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium on Tuesday night was nothing short of historic. Rajasthan Royals’ teenage prodigy, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, played an innings for the ages, blasting a jaw-dropping 93 runs to guide his team to a sensational seven-wicket victory over the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). With this win, Rajasthan Royals (RR) have successfully kept themselves in the hunt for the final IPL 2026 playoff spot.
Chasing a mammoth target of 221, the 15-year-old Sooryavanshi put on an absolute masterclass of power-hitting, clearing the boundary ropes with astonishing ease. His explosive knock ensured that Rajasthan chased down the target with five balls to spare, finishing at 225-3 in 19.1 overs.
Lucknow’s Strong Start Led by Aussie Duo
Earlier in the evening, Rajasthan’s stand-in captain Yashasvi Jaiswal won the toss and elected to bowl first in the absence of injured regular captain Riyan Parag. However, Lucknow Super Giants’ opening pair of Mitchell Marsh and Josh Inglis had other plans. The Australian duo came out firing, putting the Rajasthan bowling attack to the sword right from the get-go.
Marsh and Inglis racked up a massive 83 runs without loss in the powerplay. For the fourth consecutive game, Rajasthan’s bowling unit, which features the likes of Jofra Archer, went wicketless in the first six overs. The opening partnership eventually yielded 109 runs before Rajasthan’s wrist-spinner Yash Raj Punja provided the crucial breakthrough.
Punja bowled beautifully in the middle overs, clean bowling Inglis for a well-made 60 off the final ball of the ninth over. He then dismissed the dangerous Nicholas Pooran for just 16 to stifle Lucknow’s momentum. Despite the wickets, Mitchell Marsh kept motoring along. He brought up his half-century in just 25 balls and looked set for a well-deserved century.
However, Marsh fell agonizingly short of his hundred, dismissed for 96 off 57 balls. Jofra Archer’s brilliant final over saw Lucknow lose three wickets for just five runs. Both Marsh and LSG captain Rishabh Pant (35) were run out, before Archer clean-bowled Ayush Badoni on the final delivery to restrict Lucknow to 220-5.
The Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Storm
Chasing 221 on a flat Jaipur pitch required a strong start, and stand-in skipper Yashasvi Jaiswal provided just that. Jaiswal went after Akash Singh in the very first over, smashing four boundaries to collect 23 runs. At the other end, Sooryavanshi took a highly uncharacteristic back seat, scoring just five runs off the first ten deliveries he faced.
Once Jaiswal was dismissed by Akash Singh in his second over for a brisk 43, Sooryavanshi decided it was time to unleash. The teenager showed unbelievable power-hitting, scoring 88 runs off his next 28 deliveries. He targeted Akash Singh in the ninth over of the chase, smashing him for two massive sixes and three boundaries.
In total, Sooryavanshi’s innings was laced with 10 towering sixes and 7 boundaries. With this blitz, the youngster raised his season’s tally of sixes to 53, leaving him just seven hits away from breaking Chris Gayle’s 14-year-old IPL record of 59 sixes in a single season. Although he missed out on a century after being caught at long-on off Mohsin Khan in the 14th over, his 93-run masterpiece had already put RR in a winning position.
“I always knew I could hit anytime and didn’t want to rush at all,” Sooryavanshi said after the match. “I don’t read papers and all, I just think this is the start, and if I have a long career, then a lot of things will be said. I just want to focus on my game.”
Jurel Finishes the Job for Rajasthan Royals
Following Sooryavanshi’s departure, Dhruv Jurel took over the mantle. Ensuring there were no late hiccups, Jurel batted with maturity and composure, scoring an unbeaten 53 off 38 balls. He anchored the rest of the chase perfectly, hitting the winning runs to secure the match with five balls left in the innings.
Stand-in captain Yashasvi Jaiswal was full of praise for his young teammate after the match. “Everyone put the hard yards and worked really well,” Jaiswal said. “The way Vaibhav batted, he absolutely killed the game… we knew it was going to be a big score on this pitch.”
What This Means for the IPL 2026 Playoff Race
With this crucial victory, Rajasthan Royals have jumped to No. 4 on the IPL 2026 points table, overtaking the Punjab Kings. Three teams—Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Gujarat Titans, and Sunrisers Hyderabad—have already qualified for the playoffs. Rajasthan can secure the final playoff spot if they defeat the Mumbai Indians in their final league match. Meanwhile, Lucknow Super Giants remain rooted at 10th place, having managed only four wins from their 13 games.
