Nayeem Hasan breaks down in tears while describing alleged police abuse
The Shocking Incident Involving Bangladesh Spinner Nayeem Hasan
Bangladesh national team spinner Nayeem Hasan has made shocking allegations of harassment and physical assault against police officers in Chattogram. The incident occurred shortly after the Test cricketer returned home from competing in the Dhaka Premier League (DPL). Speaking to reporters about the traumatic event, the 25-year-old athlete was unable to hold back his emotions. In a highly charged press briefing, Nayeem Hasan breaks down in tears while describing alleged police abuse that has left the local sports community and fans deeply disturbed.
The allegations raise serious questions about the conduct of local law enforcement officers and the safety of citizens, even those who represent the nation on the global stage. According to Nayeem, individuals who identified themselves as members of the Detective Branch (DB) attempted to detain him during his journey from the airport to his residence. The cricketer described being subjected to physical violence, including being strangled, having his mobile phone confiscated, and being beaten with a baton.
A Traumatic Journey Home From the Dhaka Premier League
The ordeal began late in the evening after Nayeem Hasan finished his final match of the Dhaka Premier League season. He boarded a flight to Chattogram, landing at approximately 10:20 PM. Due to the late hour, he was unable to secure a private car and instead opted to travel home in a standard CNG auto-rickshaw. This routine decision soon turned into a nightmare near a local toll plaza.
As the auto-rickshaw approached the toll plaza, a traffic police officer signaled for the vehicle to stop. Nayeem recalled the initial moments of the encounter, stating that another officer announced they needed to inspect the vehicle. Assuming it was a standard security check, Nayeem cooperated, expecting the officers to examine his bags as part of their routine duties. However, the situation quickly and inexplicably escalated into violence.
Allegations of Physical Violence and Detention by SI Shafiq
According to Nayeem, the routine inspection turned hostile when Sub-Inspector (SI) Shafiq became aggressive. The officer allegedly pushed the cricketer into a police vehicle and locked the door behind him. Terrified and confused, Nayeem repeatedly asked what was happening and what offense he had committed. In response, SI Shafiq reportedly told him, ‘You are an accused person. Stay quiet and don\’t say a single word.’
The situation worsened as Nayeem attempted to contact his family. He alleged that the officer grabbed him by the throat in an attempt to silence him. Desperate for help, the spinner began shouting and managed to call his father before the officers forcibly took his mobile phone away. Despite his efforts to explain who he was, the aggressive behavior continued unabated.
Bystanders Intervene to Confirm Cricketer\’s Identity
As the altercation unfolded, several bystanders gathered around the scene. Many of them recognized Nayeem Hasan as a prominent member of the Bangladesh national cricket team. The crowd actively tried to de-escalate the situation by confirming his identity to the officers, explaining that he was a national athlete who had just returned from representing his team. However, these pleas and statements were completely ignored by the officers on duty.
Nayeem noted that the men detaining him were a mix of uniformed and plainclothes officers. One individual wore a standard police uniform, while another was dressed in a traditional panjabi. Despite the crowd\’s intervention and Nayeem\’s own repeated statements, the officers proceeded to transport him to the local police station under detention.
Hostile Reception at the Police Station and Sudden Attitude Shift
Upon arriving at the police station, Nayeem sought to resolve the misunderstanding by introducing himself directly to the officer-in-charge (OC). He explained that he was a Test cricketer representing Bangladesh. Instead of receiving a professional hearing, Nayeem was met with further hostility. The officer-in-charge allegedly commanded him to ‘lower his eyes’ while speaking to him, treating him like a criminal.
However, the atmosphere in the police station changed dramatically within a short period. As news of the national cricketer\’s detention spread, the station began receiving numerous phone calls from external authorities and influential figures inquiring about Nayeem\’s status. Upon realizing the identity and status of the person they had detained, the officer-in-charge’s attitude shifted completely, transitioning from hostility to cooperation.
Demanding Accountability for Police Misconduct
The emotional toll of the incident was visible as Nayeem Hasan recounted the details to the media. The young spinner questioned the authority of the officers to assault any individual, let alone a national athlete. He laid direct blame on SI Shafiq, accusing him of using physical force without justification. ‘SI Shafiq hit me with a baton. I told him he had no right to lay hands on me, but he still hit me,’ Nayeem stated through tears.
This incident has sparked widespread discussion regarding police accountability and the treatment of citizens in Bangladesh. Despite being recognized by nearly 100 people at the scene who verified his identity, the national spinner was still subjected to physical abuse and illegal detention. The cricket community and the public now await official responses and potential investigation results regarding the actions of SI Shafiq and the other involved officers in Chattogram.
