Mushfiqur Rahim Confident in Bangladesh’s Strategy to Contain Babar Azam
A Tactical Approach to a World-Class Threat
As the cricketing world turns its attention to the second Test in Sylhet, the spotlight remains firmly fixed on the return of Pakistan’s premier batter, Babar Azam. While his inclusion is undoubtedly a morale booster for the visitors, the Bangladesh camp remains undeterred. Senior wicketkeeper-batter Mushfiqur Rahim has expressed confidence in his team’s ability to keep the star batter quiet, drawing on the successes the Tigers enjoyed during their recent 2-0 series sweep in Rawalpindi.
Babar Azam’s recent history against the Bangladesh bowling attack has been difficult, with the right-hander managing only 64 runs across four innings during the 2024 series. Crucially, young pace sensation Nahid Rana, who impressed with a five-wicket haul in the first Test in Dhaka, proved to be a persistent thorn in Babar’s side, dismissing him twice during that campaign. According to Mushfiqur, the Bangladesh team has revisited those successful blueprints.
Consistent Execution Under Pressure
Reflecting on the victory in Dhaka, Mushfiqur attributed the team’s success to a collective display of consistency. "The Pakistan team is clearly facing challenges across all formats, but we won because we executed our plans effectively," he noted. While acknowledging Babar’s status as a world-class cricketer, Mushfiqur emphasized that the Bangladesh team understands exactly where to attack. "We know where to target him and how to construct our plans. Our goal is to remain composed and put both him and the opposition under sustained pressure."
The upcoming Test presents a unique challenge, with weather forecasts suggesting potential interruptions. However, the senior campaigner views this as part of the professional cricketer’s life. "We are playing during the rainy season, so the ability to stay ‘switched on’ is vital. Fortunately, the drainage system in Sylhet is world-class, and we have seen successful play here recently despite weather challenges. We must focus on our tasks when on the field and remain disciplined during the lulls," he added.
The Evolution of Bangladesh’s Test Setup
Mushfiqur also took the time to highlight the evolution of the Bangladesh Test squad, noting that the current iteration is arguably the most consistent in the nation’s history. He pointed out that the increase in the number of Test matches played annually—often eight to ten games now compared to the three played in previous years—has allowed for better rhythm and team cohesion.
Central to this newfound stability is the leadership of captain Najmul Hossain Shanto. Mushfiqur praised Shanto’s proactive approach, stating, "He takes leadership in a very positive light and leads by example. It makes the rest of the team eager to follow his lead. His consistency as a batter is also a massive asset for us across all formats."
Unwavering Personal Preparation
For a veteran like Mushfiqur, the secret to longevity lies in the relentless pursuit of perfection in the nets. Even after the official team sessions conclude, the wicketkeeper-batter is often found honing his skills independently. He explains that his preparation process is personal and tailored to build the confidence needed for the demanding five-day format.
"Training schedules can be tight when you are working with a group of fifteen players, so I often put in extra hours separately," Mushfiqur shared. "I ensure that I do not keep anyone waiting, but I take the one or two hours required to feel prepared. My focus remains on the process—the same process that has sustained me throughout my career. As we head into the Sylhet Test, the team remains fully focused on the objective: maintaining our momentum and executing our game plan to the highest standard."
With the stage set in Sylhet, all eyes will be on whether Bangladesh can replicate their clinical performance from Dhaka or if the return of Babar Azam will spark a resurgence for the Pakistan side. For now, the narrative remains centered on Bangladesh’s tactical maturity and their readiness for the fight ahead.
