Kumar Sangakkara Joins Transformation Committee to Overhaul Sri Lanka Cricket

A New Chapter for Sri Lanka Cricket

In a move that has sent shockwaves through the sporting landscape, the Sri Lankan government has dissolved the previous office bearers of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) and appointed a high-profile Transformation Committee to oversee the sport’s future. Among the nine members tasked with this monumental challenge is legendary cricketer and former national captain, Kumar Sangakkara.

The composition of this committee is diverse, blending cricketing pedigree with legal, political, and corporate expertise. Joining Sangakkara on this mission are iconic figures like Roshan Mahanama and Sidath Wettimuny, both of whom bring immense experience in both playing the game and understanding its administrative nuances. However, the committee is chaired by Eran Wickramaratne, a former Member of Parliament and seasoned corporate figure, who has reportedly stepped down from his political party roles to ensure total focus on this critical assignment.

Defining the Objectives of the Transformation Committee

Wickramaratne, in his inaugural statement, emphasized that the committee is built on a foundation of integrity. He highlighted two primary pillars that will guide their work: a complete overhaul of the SLC governance framework and the pursuit of excellence on the field of play.

1. Governance Reform and Constitutional Change
The current SLC constitution has faced years of intense criticism. It has been described as archaic, often empowering non-performing bodies while failing to foster a transparent environment. The committee, bolstered by the presence of legal experts Dinal Phillips and Upul Kumarapperuma, aims to draft and implement a new, modern constitution. This document is expected to serve as the bedrock for a transparent, anti-corruption, and professional administrative structure.

2. Restoring Competitive Success
Beyond administration, the goal is to return Sri Lanka to the top tier of international cricket. Wickramaratne stated that the committee plans to focus on world-class facilities, robust incentive models, and the necessary structures to empower national players. The objective is clear: to ensure that the national teams deliver consistent performances at the highest level.

The Challenge of Political Interference

The involvement of the government in sports administration naturally raises questions about the International Cricket Council (ICC) regulations. The ICC has historically taken a firm stance against political interference, having previously suspended SLC in 2023 and, in 2015, reduced the governing body to observer status while holding funds in escrow.

However, the committee has been quick to assert its commitment to compliance. Wickramaratne reiterated that the group is dedicated to adhering to all ICC regulations while embedding a culture of professionalism within the organization. The fact that the committee chair hails from the opposition party rather than the ruling government is being seen by many as a deliberate attempt to maintain neutrality and public trust.

Addressing Public Outcry

The appointment of this committee follows months of mounting public pressure. The tenure of former SLC president Shammi Silva had become increasingly controversial, particularly following Sri Lanka’s underwhelming performance at the recent T20 Men’s World Cup. The fact that Silva had secured the presidency uncontested multiple times while the national teams struggled to reach the knockouts since 2014 had become a symbol of the systemic dysfunction that fans and critics alike were desperate to address.

The Nine-Member Committee

The diverse group appointed to steer the course of Sri Lankan cricket includes:

  • Eran Wickramaratne (Politics/Corporate)
  • Kumar Sangakkara (Cricket/Business)
  • Roshan Mahanama (Cricket/Corporate)
  • Sidath Wettimuny (Cricket/Corporate)
  • Prakash Schaffter (Corporate/Cricket)
  • Avanthi Colombage (Corporate)
  • Thushira Radella (Corporate)
  • Upul Kumarapperuma (Law/Politics)
  • Dinal Phillips (Law)

As this committee begins its work, the cricket world will be watching closely. With the combined experience of figures like Wettimuny, who previously led the 2015 interim committee, and the global stature of Sangakkara, there is a renewed sense of cautious optimism that Sri Lanka Cricket may finally be on the path toward structural integrity and sporting revival.
