Julian Metherell Named as Next President of MCC: A New Era at Lord’s
A Strategic Transition for the Home of Cricket
The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) has officially confirmed that Julian Metherell, a veteran figure within the sport’s administration and a distinguished financial professional, will be its next president. Set to take the reins from the incumbent, Ed Smith, on October 1, 2026, Metherell’s appointment marks a significant moment for the historic institution as it navigates the evolving landscape of global cricket.
The Pedigree of an Experienced Leader
Metherell is far from a stranger to the corridors of Lord’s. A dedicated member of the MCC for four decades, his professional career is defined by high-level expertise in the financial sector. Between 1999 and 2011, he served as a partner at Goldman Sachs, holding the position of Chief Executive Officer of the UK investment banking division from 2006. His corporate leadership extends to the energy and shipping industries, having founded the London-listed company Genel Energy. Furthermore, his commitment to institutional leadership is evidenced by his role as the Non-Executive Chair of the Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA) from 2019 to 2024, as well as his chairing of the Advisory Board at Cambridge University’s Judge Business School.
The Influence of London Spirit
Perhaps most pivotal to his appointment is his recent role regarding The Hundred. Metherell served as the lead negotiator during the 2025 equity sale, a landmark deal that saw a Silicon Valley consortium—led by Palo Alto Networks CEO Nikesh Arora—invest approximately £145 million for a 49% stake in London Spirit. This valuation established the franchise as the wealthiest within the competition. Following the transfer of the franchise from the ECB to its new owners on October 1, 2025, Metherell was appointed chair, a position that has undoubtedly shaped his candidacy for the MCC presidency.
The integration of the London Spirit identity into the broader MCC framework has been a notable success, with the club recently unveiling a new logo and kit that honors the traditional egg-and-bacon livery alongside the franchise’s royal blue theme.
A Vision for the Future
Reflecting on his appointment, Metherell expressed a deep sense of humility and excitement. “I am deeply honoured to take on the role of MCC President, following in the footsteps of many of my cricketing idols,” he stated. “I have a long connection with MCC and I have many cherished memories at Lord’s. This is a really exciting time to be involved with MCC, especially as it starts a new era of ownership of a professional cricket team and I am looking forward to driving forward both the Club and London Spirit.”
Endorsement from Ed Smith
The outgoing president, Ed Smith, was instrumental in the nomination process, citing the need for leadership characterized by specialized experience and a genuine love for the sport. “During such an exciting period for MCC, I wanted to choose a successor with huge expertise and experience, combined with a deep passion for the game and for the club,” Smith remarked. “Julian Metherell is a great and trusted friend to cricket and an exceptional candidate. It is with enormous pleasure that I nominate him as the President of MCC from 1 October 2026.”
What Lies Ahead
As Metherell prepares to assume his new duties, the cricketing world looks toward a highly anticipated future. His tenure will coincide with a major milestone for the Home of Cricket, as Lord’s is set to host Australia’s men’s and women’s teams for the 2027 Ashes series. With his unique blend of financial acumen and deep-seated commitment to the sport’s values, Metherell is well-positioned to guide the MCC through the complexities of modern cricket administration while preserving the rich heritage that defines the club.
