Delhi Capitals Squad Changes for IPL 2027: Players Likely to Be Released After 2026 Struggles

Delhi Capitals Set for Major Overhaul Ahead of IPL 2027

The writing may not be officially on the wall yet, but it’s definitely being drafted in red ink. Delhi Capitals’ IPL 2026 season has fizzled into irrelevance, with just two games remaining and even a mathematical chance at playoffs requiring miracles in results and net run rate. Currently seventh on the points table with five wins from 12 matches, the team’s struggles have intensified scrutiny on both performance and leadership.

Reports now indicate that captain Axar Patel and the entire coaching staff could be let go before IPL 2027. But the axe isn’t just falling on the dugout—several players are also likely to be released as Delhi prepares for a full-scale rebuild.

Players Likely to Be Released by Delhi Capitals

Ben Duckett – The Withdrawn Signee

There won’t be much drama here—Duckett is already out. Bought for INR 2 crore ahead of IPL 2026, the English batter pulled out just before the season to focus on the County Championship and his Test ambitions. Under IPL rules, such withdrawals result in a two-year ban—meaning Duckett will miss both 2027 and 2028. Delhi replaced him with leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed, a move that may become permanent.

Karun Nair – Flash in the Pan

Nair’s IPL comeback started with fireworks. In his first match back since 2022, he blazed 89 off 40 balls against Mumbai Indians, showing the strokeplay that once earned him an international recall. But that was the peak. Since then, he’s managed only 18 runs in two appearances in 2026 at a strike rate of 100. With Delhi stacked in the top order, there’s little room for sentiment—Nair’s second stint could be over.

Pathum Nissanka – Unfulfilled Promise

Bought for INR 4 crore after a strong showing in Sri Lanka’s home T20 World Cup campaign, expectations were high. However, Nissanka delivered just 278 runs in 10 matches, with two fifties propping up an otherwise inconsistent run tally. A strike rate of 158 and an average of 28 won’t cut it for a top-order anchor. With Prithvi Shaw, Nitish Rana, and Abhishek Porel all competing for spots, Nissanka is unlikely to survive the cull.

Mayank Yadav Nigam – Bright Start, Dim Finish

The young leg-spinner from Uttar Pradesh announced himself with a stunning debut—smashing crucial runs in a tense chase against Lucknow Super Giants. He showed promise with the ball last season, but 2026 has been a regression. In five matches, he’s taken just two wickets at an average of 56.5 and an economy of 12.55. With Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, and Rehan Ahmed already in the spin mix, Nigam may be deemed expendable.

Kyle Jamieson – The Expensive Flop

Acquired for his base price of INR 2 crore, the tall New Zealand pacer was expected to bolster Delhi’s death bowling. Instead, he’s been inconsistent—taking only two wickets in two games at an economy rate of 12.85. Having already played for three IPL franchises, Jamieson hasn’t cemented his place. With Mitchell Starc, Lungi Ngidi, and Dushmantha Chameera in the lineup, Jamieson looks like a surplus asset.

Arshin Kulkarni – Too Early for the Big Stage?

The 18-year-old Maharashtra batter was handed a baptism by fire—facing Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the powerplay on debut and scoring a two-ball duck. He followed it with 13 runs in a high-scoring win against Punjab Kings. With minimal experience—just two T20 matches before IPL—and a congested top order, Kulkarni is most likely to be the first cut in DC’s upcoming rebuild.

What Lies Ahead for Delhi Capitals?

The franchise hasn’t officially confirmed any releases or coaching changes, but the direction is clear. Five consecutive seasons without playoffs—echoing the barren stretches of their Delhi Daredevils era—demand structural change. Whether it’s a new captain, a revamped support staff, or a leaner, more dynamic squad, Delhi Capitals must act decisively if they hope to return as title contenders by 2027.
