The Rise of Bangladesh’s New Speed Sensation

Bangladesh cricket has historically been synonymous with slow, turning tracks and a heavy reliance on spin bowling. However, over the past few years, a quiet revolution has been brewing in the country’s fast-bowling department. At the heart of this transition is a new breed of exciting young speedsters, with none catching the eye quite like Nahid Rana.

Recently, former South African legendary fast bowler and Bangladesh pace bowling coach Allan Donald spoke about the young speed merchant on a Wisden podcast, expressing immense excitement about his rapid development and recalling the very first moment he laid eyes on him.

A Rare and Natural Talent

Speaking on the podcast, Donald could not hide his enthusiasm for Rana’s breakthrough onto the international stage. For a bowler of Donald’s stature—affectionately known as “White Lightning” during his playing days—to be highly excited about a young prospect speaks volumes about the pacer’s raw potential.

Donald praised Rana’s physical attributes, noting how his athletic build contributes to his high-velocity bowling style. ‐He’s a handful, that kid. He’s quick, he’s lean, he’s just a fantastic athlete,‑ Donald remarked, highlighting the natural gifts that set Rana apart from his peers.

The Chattogram Discovery

Donald also shared the fascinating story of his first encounter with Rana, which took place during a specialized fast-bowling camp. This was not a standard national team training session, but a grassroots talent hunt organized in Chattogram, designed to bring together promising young quicks from all corners of Bangladesh.

‐I first saw Nahid at a camp,‑ Donald explained. ‐I saw him in a camp that was organised. They brought a whole bunch of young quicks from all over Bangladesh to Chattogram for a two-and-a-half-day camp, and that’s where I met him for the first time.‑

The impact of seeing Rana bowl for the first time was immediate and profound. Donald was so impressed by the teenager’s natural pace and unrefined talent that he immediately urged then-head coach Russell Domingo to fast-track him into the national setup, despite his lack of experience.

‐I was so excited about him that I told Russell Domingo, the coach at that stage, let’s chuck this kid in somewhere. He’s unknown, he’s raw, he’s quick,‑ Donald added.

Making Waves in International Cricket

Fast forward to the present day, and Nahid Rana is no longer an unknown commodity. He has rapidly evolved into one of the most talked-about young cricketers in the world. His transition from a raw talent at a two-and-a-half-day camp to an all-format international bowler has been nothing short of spectacular.

Over the past year, Rana has delivered standout performances across multiple competitive platforms, including:

  • The Pakistan Super League (PSL): Showcasing his ability to perform under high pressure against world-class batsmen.
  • ODI Series against Pakistan and New Zealand: Demonstrating consistency and tactical growth in white-ball cricket.
  • Test Series against Pakistan: Playing a key role in Bangladesh’s historic performances with his hostile pace and bounce.

A Proud Mentor

For Donald, seeing Rana successfully transition to playing across all three formats for the national team is a source of immense pride and satisfaction. The legendary fast bowler feels validated in his early assessment of the youngster’s boundless potential.

‐Now he’s doing it in all formats. It’s, it’s just amazing to see,‑ Donald said with excitement.

As Bangladesh continues to build a formidable pace battery to compete on bouncy overseas wickets, the emergence of Nahid Rana stands as a testament to the country’s growing fast-bowling depth and the invaluable role of world-class mentoring in shaping the future of the game.
