Scotland still have 2028 T20 World Cup automatic qualification incentive

Scotland’s Chance for Automatic Qualification

Scotland still have plenty to play for at the T20 World Cup despite being out of contention for the semi-finals. The teams that finish in the top four of each group will automatically qualify for the 2028 T20 World Cup which will be held in Pakistan as another 12-team event.

Scotland are currently fifth in their group with one match left to play, against fourth-placed Sri Lanka. Scotland are only marginally behind Sri Lanka and a little further behind New Zealand (who play England in their final match) on net run-rate and a win could see them go above those teams and avoid a qualification tournament ahead of the next T20 World Cup.

Qualification Criteria

Cricinfo has confirmed that the following criteria apply for teams to secure their spots at the next tournament:

  • Top eight teams (teams that finish in the top four in each of the groups) from the T20 World Cup 2026
  • Host (if not qualified through the route above)
  • Next-highest-ranked teams on ICC Women’s T20I rankings table as on July 6, 2026
  • Two other teams through the global qualifier

As things stand, Australia, India, South Africa and Bangladesh make up the top four of Group 1 while England, West Indies, New Zealand and Sri Lanka are in the same positions in Group 2. The Group 1 top four is unlikely to change but the Group 2 places could see Scotland move to the same number of points as Sri Lanka and New Zealand – four.

With Pakistan qualifying as hosts, despite currently being winless at this event and unable to finish in the top four of their group, there will only be place for one team to qualify automatically from the rankings.

Currently, the ICC rankings have Ireland in ninth place, Bangladesh at tenth and Scotland in 11th, which means that if automatic qualification were to be decided today, Scotland would miss out, despite beating Ireland in the tournament. A top-four finish would ensure they don’t, as would a rise up the rankings by the end of this World Cup. Netherlands, ranked 14th, are likely to have to play in the qualifier and Ireland could find themselves in the same position.

The next T20 World Cup has space for only two teams to get in via the global qualifier, while four teams advanced from this year’s event in January: Bangladesh, Ireland, Scotland and Netherlands.
