Atkinson Strikes on Surrey Return Before Cooke and Crane Lead Recovery
Glamorgan recovered from a precarious 39 for 4 to finish the day on 244 for 6, thanks to a counter-attacking century from Chris Cooke and a supporting role from Mason Crane.
Glamorgan 244 for 6 (Cooke 101*, Crane 59*) vs Surrey
Atkinson Makes Impact on Return
Gus Atkinson took two wickets on his return to Surrey, removing Kiran Carlson and Ben Kellaway while conceding just eight runs in as many overs in his morning spell.
Atkinson was not considered for selection at The Oval after he and captain Ben Stokes broke England’s curfew while celebrating their 115-run win in the first Test against New Zealand at Lord’s, but could yet come back into contention at Trent Bridge next week.
Cooke and Crane Lead Recovery
From 39 for 4, Glamorgan fought back to 244 for 6 with Cooke ending 101 not out to complete a first century since September 2024, supported by Mason Crane (59 not out) in an unbeaten 165-run partnership.
One of five changes from their draw with Hampshire, Sean Abbott removed both openers in Surrey’s dominant morning ahead of things worsening for Glamorgan by having Colin Ingram retiring hurt, struck on the hand by Atkinson – adding to Carlson and Asa Tribe taking earlier blows before being removed.
After winning the toss and opting to bat, Glamorgan were quickly up against it. Billy Root, opening up in place of the injured Zain ul Hassan, was first to fall, squirting to backward point. Tribe battled away for 21 but didn’t last long after having his helmet struck firmly, and Carlson never looked comfortable from when he looked to duck a first ball that hit him in the thigh pad.
Cooke Finds Form
Cooke found the boundary regularly to help him to 50 from 56 balls, having already bettered his first-class season best of 39.
Crane, who has provided healthy contributions in times of need this season, played a supporting role as the pitch offered less and less as the day continued.
After a late tea, Cooke was forced to be more measured, still able to bring up his first century for nearly two years, pulling Chahar away to follow his teammate to a milestone in the game.
By the time light had withered Glamorgan left the field with momentum their way but the innings still in the balance sitting six runs short of their first bonus point.
