DPL round 2: Mohammedan sniff rare title but Abahani and Prime still in race
The Title Race Heats Up
The Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League (DPL) has reached a critical juncture following the completion of eight rounds of play. With all 12 teams having contested eight matches each, the focus now shifts to the final three rounds of the season. Notably, this year’s format does not feature a Super League, meaning every point accumulated in the current phase is vital for the championship outcome. Currently, the DPL round 2: Mohammedan sniff rare title but Abahani and Prime still in race scenario dominates the conversation, as the league leaders look to break a 17-year drought.
Mohammedan’s Dominance and the Chasers
Mohammedan Sporting Club (MSC) has firmly established itself at the top of the points table. Their consistent performances have placed them in a prime position to claim their first title in nearly two decades. However, the path to glory is far from easy. Defending champions Abahani Limited are breathing down their necks. Despite a shaky start to the season with two consecutive defeats, Abahani has orchestrated a remarkable six-match winning streak, proving why they remain the team to beat.
Equally dangerous is the Prime Bank Cricket Club. Sitting on 12 points alongside Abahani, Prime Bank currently occupies the third spot due to an inferior net run rate. The battle between these three giants is expected to go down to the final delivery of the season.
Batting Brilliance
The batting charts have seen some extraordinary displays of talent this season. Prime Bank’s Shahadat Hossain has been a standout performer, amassing 491 runs and nearing the 500-run milestone. His consistency, bolstered by two centuries in the current campaign, has been instrumental to his team’s success. Close behind is Mohammedan’s Towhid Hridoy, who has scored 427 runs at an impressive average of 71.16. His form is particularly encouraging for Bangladesh, given the upcoming ODI series against Australia.
Agrani Bank’s Mahfijul Islam has also proven his mettle, crossing the 400-run mark with two centuries to his name. Furthermore, the opening partnership between Shahadat Hossain and Tanzid Hasan has been record-breaking. Their dual-century performance against Brothers Union marked the seventh instance in DPL history where both openers reached triple figures in the same game, with Prime Bank’s pair achieving this feat four times this season alone.
The Rise of Mystery Spinners
While batters have grabbed headlines, the bowlers have been equally influential. Prime Bank’s Aliss Al Islam continues to baffle opposition lineups. With 22 wickets, he currently leads the wicket-taking charts, boasting a hat-trick to his credit. His ability to stifle scoring rates makes him a lethal weapon for Prime Bank. Meanwhile, Gazi Group Cricketers’ Md Rubel has emerged as a revelation in his debut season, taking 15 wickets at an average of 15.26, including a stunning 6 for 23 against Dhaka Leopards.
A Historic Chase
One of the most memorable matches of the season occurred when Agrani Bank successfully chased down a mammoth target of 327 against City Club. Abdullah Al Mamun’s brilliant 151 provided City Club with a solid base of 326. However, Mahfijul Islam’s masterclass, where he scored 147 off 141 balls, anchored the chase. Supported by Shadman Islam’s 78, Agrani Bank secured a victory with just two balls to spare, a result that significantly bolsters their hopes of avoiding relegation.
The Fight for Survival and Future Talent
At the bottom of the table, the situation is grim for Brothers Union, Rupganj Tigers, and Gulshan Cricket Club (GCC). All three teams currently sit on two points, making them prime candidates for relegation. While the Tigers have shown flashes of resilience, Brothers and GCC have struggled significantly, putting their DPL status for next season at risk.
Looking ahead, the selection committee is keeping a close eye on rising stars. Mystery spinners Aliss and Rubel, alongside the aggressive Habibur Rahman, are leading candidates for the upcoming High Performance team assignment against Zimbabwe A. Habibur, in particular, has impressed by taking on elite bowlers like Taskin Ahmed and Nahid Rana, signaling that the future of Bangladeshi cricket remains in safe hands as the DPL draws to a close.
