Why Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Still Doesn’t Deserve A Place In India’s T20I Squad – Why Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Should Wait for His India T20I Call-up

The Meteoric Rise of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi

When the Rajasthan Royals invested INR 1.10 crore in a relatively unknown teenager named Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, the cricketing world reacted with skepticism. It did not take long, however, for that doubt to turn into awe. Sooryavanshi has not only silenced his critics but has established himself as the most exciting batting prospect in the Indian Premier League. As the 2026 season reaches its climax, the conversation surrounding the youngster has shifted from ‘who is he’ to ‘when will he play for India’.

Yet, amidst the noise and the glowing praise, there exists a compelling argument for caution. While his numbers are undeniable, transitioning from the high-octane environment of the IPL to the demanding stage of international T20I cricket requires more than just raw hitting ability. Here is why the BCCI should resist the urge to fast-track Sooryavanshi into the Indian squad just yet.

A Settled Winning Formula

International cricket is built on consistency, and currently, India’s T20I top order is functioning like a well-oiled machine. The partnership between Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma was instrumental in India’s triumph at the 2026 T20 World Cup. They provide the perfect blend of aggression, experience, and tactical understanding of the game.

The mantra ‘if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it’ remains highly relevant here. By breaking up a successful pair, the team management risks destabilizing a unit that has already proven its worth on the global stage. Abhishek and Samson have earned their spots through years of hard work and recent successes; they deserve the continuity of being the primary choice for the foreseeable future. Introducing a newcomer prematurely could disrupt the team’s balance, especially when the current incumbents are performing at such a high level.

The ‘Impact Player’ Dilemma and Fielding Standards

One of the most significant challenges Sooryavanshi faces is the tactical environment of the IPL compared to international matches. In the IPL, the ‘Impact Player’ rule has allowed the Rajasthan Royals to hide Sooryavanshi’s defensive vulnerabilities. His role has been clearly defined: he bats when the team needs runs and is often substituted off when the team takes the field. This strategy has allowed him to focus entirely on his strength—power hitting—without the burden of fielding for twenty overs.

International cricket offers no such luxury. There is no Impact Player rule, and every member of the eleven must contribute in all three facets of the game: batting, bowling, and, crucially, fielding. Sooryavanshi has displayed occasional lapses in the field, including dropped catches that might prove costly in international arenas where every run saved is vital. Until he is physically and technically prepared to field at an international standard for a full innings, his inclusion in the national side remains a significant tactical risk.

Developmental Patience: Is it Too Early?

At just 15 years old, Sooryavanshi is a prodigy of the highest order. However, talent alone is rarely enough to sustain a long career at the top level. The transition from domestic cricket to the international stage is immense, not just in terms of technical skill but also mental fortitude. India has seen many ‘one-season wonders’ who failed to replicate their early success once teams began to analyze their weaknesses and formulate specific plans against them.

Furthermore, there are countless domestic performers who have ground out results in the Ranji Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy for years, awaiting their turn. While Sooryavanshi’s potential is undeniable, giving him another year of domestic seasoning would likely benefit his long-term development. Allowing him to grow away from the intense media spotlight of the national team will help him mature into a more complete player. There is no need to rush a teenager when the current talent pool is already so deep and well-established. The selectors have the luxury of time, and they should use it to ensure that when Sooryavanshi does eventually get his debut, he is truly ready to thrive, not just survive.
