Agarkar: Sooryavanshi ‘picked himself’ in T20I squad, we’ve got ‘high hopes of h’ – A New Star Rises
A Meteoric Rise to International Cricket
The landscape of Indian cricket is witnessing a historic moment as 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi earns his maiden call-up to the national T20I squad. Following a sensational run in the Indian Premier League (IPL), the youngster has been drafted into the team for upcoming series in Ireland and England, as well as the prestigious Asian Games men’s cricket competition.
The Selector’s Perspective
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar was unequivocal in his praise for the young prodigy. When addressing the media, Agarkar noted that the panel had little choice but to select the youngster, remarking that Agarkar: Sooryavanshi ‘picked himself’ in T20I squad, we’ve got ‘high hopes of h’. According to the selectors, his performances over the last two seasons have been impossible to ignore.
During the 2026 IPL season, Sooryavanshi amassed a staggering 776 runs with a blistering strike rate of 237.30. His ability to carry the Rajasthan Royals into the playoffs almost single-handedly served as the primary catalyst for his swift promotion to the senior international ranks.
Breaking Records and Bowlers
Sooryavanshi’s journey began in earnest when he became the youngest centurion in men’s T20 history at just 14 years old, smashing a 38-ball 101 against the Gujarat Titans in 2025. It was not just the volume of runs, but the quality of the opposition that stood out. In the most recent IPL season, his clinical dismantling of elite bowlers such as Jasprit Bumrah and Mitchell Starc convinced the selection committee that he possessed the temperament required for international cricket.
“I think he just has picked himself really,” Agarkar stated. “With his performances, he has almost forced us to pick him. For a young kid, it is not just about the skill he displays, but his explosive nature and his capability to be a genuine game-changer. Like everyone else who has watched T20 cricket in India, we have got high hopes of him.”
Managing Expectations and Future Growth
While the excitement surrounding Sooryavanshi is palpable, the selectors remain committed to a measured approach. Agarkar emphasized that while the T20 format is where the youngster has excelled, there is no need to rush him into other formats, specifically Test cricket.
“I just explained his performances have made us pick him in the format that he’s excelled over the last couple of seasons of the IPL,” Agarkar explained. “With regards to red-ball cricket, he’s just a kid starting his journey. When the domestic season starts, we will wait and observe. At this point, why jump the gun?”
The current objective is to integrate him into the T20 setup and provide him with the necessary support to thrive. The BCCI and the coaching staff are focused on guiding him in the right direction, ensuring that his transition from a teenage sensation to an international cricketer is as seamless as possible.
The Road Ahead
The upcoming T20I series will provide the ultimate test for the teenager. Facing international bowling attacks in varied conditions will present challenges far beyond what he has encountered in domestic T20 leagues. However, his performance at the Under-19 level, combined with his high-pressure IPL experience, suggests he has the maturity to handle the step up.
As he prepares to wear the national jersey, all eyes will be on how Sooryavanshi handles the weight of expectation. If he can replicate even a fraction of the intensity and ability he demonstrated during his IPL campaigns, Indian cricket may have found its next true superstar.
