Tamim: Building a world-class High Performance Centre ‘my biggest dream’
A Vision for the Future of Bangladesh Cricket
The landscape of Bangladesh cricket is standing at a pivotal crossroads, and at the helm of this transformation is the newly appointed BCB president, Tamim Iqbal. Recognizing the urgent need for structural development, the former national captain has set his sights on a project of unprecedented scale. For the veteran leader, Tamim: Building a world-class High Performance Centre ‘my biggest dream’ remains the primary objective during his tenure, marking a significant shift in how the board plans to nurture the next generation of talent.
The Purbachal Project
Since being appointed to lead the ad hoc committee by the government last April, Tamim has been working tirelessly to conceptualize a facility that transcends the limitations of the current setup. The current High Performance Centre, located on the premises of the Shere Bangla National Stadium, is constrained by space and resources. To address this, Tamim has already initiated plans to develop a new, expansive facility in the eastern suburb of Purbachal.
“The High Performance Center is probably my biggest dream,” Tamim expressed during a recent press briefing. “I hope that I can fulfill this dream. We will need big support from the government. Initially, the BCB can fund this center, but we have already asked the company that designed the existing centre for a re-design to meet modern global standards.”
Acknowledging the financial gravity of such an undertaking, Tamim remains pragmatic. He has already engaged in high-level discussions with the country’s finance minister, who reportedly responded with optimism. Securing this governmental support is seen as a vital step in transforming this vision into a physical reality that will serve as the heart of Bangladesh’s cricketing ecosystem for decades to come.
Restoring Reputation and Respect
Beyond the bricks and mortar of a new facility, Tamim is acutely aware of the internal challenges facing the board. The last eighteen months have been marred by controversy, including the team’s absence at the T20 World Cup and strained relationships with the media. Restoring the dignity of the sport is a task Tamim treats with the utmost seriousness.
“The players need to be respected as much as possible—not just current cricketers, but former cricketers too,” he noted. “Every stakeholder in Bangladesh cricket will be respected. It was maybe lacking in the BCB in the last one and a half years. We have to come together and fix this damaged reputation of Bangladesh cricket.”
A Culture of Transparency and Accountability
Transparency has been a recurring demand from fans and critics alike, and the new administration appears determined to break away from past patterns. Tamim has vowed to run the board with full honesty, welcoming the scrutiny that comes with such a high-profile position. He recognizes that while the road ahead is fraught with the potential for error, the key lies in the speed and efficacy of rectification.
“I want to ensure maximum transparency. I am sure that all of us at the board are not going to do anything controversial. We want to work with full honesty,” Tamim stated. “I am sure we will make mistakes, but I look forward to seeing how quickly we rectify those mistakes.”
The Weight of Responsibility
When asked about his personal feelings regarding his rise to the presidency, Tamim maintains a grounded perspective. He views the appointment not as a personal triumph, but as a heavy burden of service. Having been an outspoken critic of the board’s operations for years, he now finds himself in the unique position of having to implement the very changes he once advocated for from the sidelines.
“There is no extra feeling that I have become something really big. It is a massive responsibility,” he concluded. “I have spoken about so many things about the cricket board for the last few years, so now I feel that this is the time when I have to prove myself to everyone.” As the nation watches, the commitment to institutional reform and the drive toward building a world-class training facility suggest that a new, focused era for Bangladesh cricket may finally be dawning.
