Suryakumar had notably stepped away from his professional commitments earlier in the week, missing the travel arrangements with his IPL franchise, Mumbai Indians, for their scheduled fixture against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. While the cricketing world speculated on the reasons behind his absence, it was later confirmed that the captain had stayed back to support his wife, Devisha Shetty, during the arrival of their first child.

Who is Devisha Shetty?
To understand the foundation behind the success of the man often referred to as ‘SKY’, one must look at the person standing firmly by his side. Devisha Shetty was born on November 7, 1993, in Mumbai, into a supportive South Indian family. Her father, Devdas Shetty, is an established hotelier, while her mother, Lata Shetty, is a homemaker. Growing up alongside her elder sister, Deeksha, Devisha enjoyed a nurturing upbringing in the heart of India’s commercial capital.
Her academic journey took her through the halls of the prestigious Bombay Scottish School and later to the R.A. Podar College of Commerce and Economics. Beyond the classroom, Devisha cultivated a profound passion for the arts. She pursued dance with professional rigor, eventually establishing herself as a trained dancer and a dance coach in the vibrant city of Mumbai.
The Love Story That Conquered All
The bond between Suryakumar and Devisha is one of mutual growth and admiration. Their love story traces back to 2010 when the two first met at the R.A. Podar College of Commerce and Economics. It was an instant connection forged through contrasting talents: Devisha’s deep appreciation for Surya’s rising prowess on the cricket field, and his genuine awe for her fluidity and grace on the dance floor. After six years of building a strong foundation, the couple tied the knot on July 7, 2016.
The Question That Changed Everything
Perhaps the most fascinating aspect of their relationship is the tangible impact Devisha had on Suryakumar’s professional trajectory. In an era where many players struggle with the pressure of waiting for a national call-up, it was a blunt, honest question from his wife that served as the catalyst for his career transformation in 2018.
Reflecting on his journey during a podcast with PTI, Suryakumar recalled the moment Devisha asked him, “If you want to play for India, how do you plan to do it?” At the time, Suryakumar was struggling to make the leap to the national side despite his domestic success. Devisha’s observation that many of his peers were already representing India sparked a fire in him.
“She told me that all those who played with you in the age group, a lot of them are now playing for India, what do you have in mind? I said: ‘Mujhe bhi India khelna hai (I want to play for India too)’. ‘Kaise kheloge’ (how do you plan to do it?), she asked,” SKY revealed.
That honest reality check prompted a total shift in lifestyle. Suryakumar adopted a strict, disciplined regimen and began challenging his own habits. The result was a dramatic rise in form, leading to his maiden India call-up just three years later at the age of 30. He famously made an immediate impact, becoming the first Indian batter to strike a six on his very first ball faced in T20I cricket. Today, as he balances the responsibilities of being a father and a national captain, the cricket fraternity celebrates both his professional legacy and this beautiful new chapter in his personal life.
