Sai Sudharsan: Why the GT Star Deserves an India T20I Call-Up
The Rise of Sai Sudharsan: A National Contender
In the high-octane world of the Indian Premier League, where power-hitting often takes center stage, Sai Sudharsan has carved out a niche for himself through sheer elegance and relentless consistency. As the Gujarat Titans (GT) continue their dominant run in the 2026 season, the conversation surrounding the national team selection has shifted toward the young left-hander. Former Indian batting stalwart Wasim Jaffer has been among the most vocal supporters, insisting that it is high time Sudharsan is given a serious look for the Indian T20I squad.
A Consistent Force for Gujarat Titans
Sudharsan’s rise to prominence is not a sudden flash in the pan but the result of years of sustained excellence. Since his entry into the IPL, his numbers have been nothing short of extraordinary. Following a promising IPL 2024 campaign where he amassed 527 runs, including one century and two fifties, he truly announced himself on the big stage during the 2025 season. Finishing as the Orange Cap winner, he accumulated a staggering 759 runs with a century and six half-centuries, proving he is a reliable anchor for the Gujarat Titans.
His form has remained undeterred in the current 2026 season. Across 11 appearances, he has already racked up 501 runs at an impressive strike rate of 155.10 and an average of 41.75. With one century and five fifties to his credit, Sudharsan has cemented his role as the backbone of the GT batting lineup. To date, he has amassed 2294 runs in 52 IPL games, maintaining an average of 47.79 and a solid strike rate of 147.80, featuring three centuries.
The Match-Winning Mindset
Sudharsan’s ability to thrive on challenging surfaces was on full display in GT’s recent 82-run demolition of SunRisers Hyderabad. While the pitch proved difficult for many, Sudharsan anchored the innings with a poised 61 off 44 balls. This display of technique—pairing two sixes and five boundaries with smart rotation of strike—was instrumental in guiding GT to a defendable 168/5. The subsequent bowling brilliance of Mohammed Siraj, Kagiso Rabada, and Jason Holder ensured a comfortable victory, pushing GT to the top of the IPL 2026 points table.
Wasim Jaffer’s Strong Endorsement
Wasim Jaffer, an expert who understands the nuances of classic batting, has been quick to defend Sudharsan’s claim to a national spot. Addressing the common misconception that T20 cricket is only about raw power, Jaffer highlighted the importance of Sudharsan’s unorthodox yet effective approach.
“He plays orthodox cricket shots, but he does not play slowly. He does surprise you. He scores on both sides and is very impressive,” Jaffer noted. The former opener emphasized that Sudharsan’s consistent run-scoring, regardless of the match situation, makes him a valuable asset. “We do not take his name for the Indian T20 team, but he is putting his case forward. This guy has to be there. Why should we only see six hits? He is doing his job.”
The Road Ahead for the Titans
As the league stage nears its conclusion, Gujarat Titans find themselves in a commanding position. With 16 points from 8 wins in 12 games, they are within arm’s reach of a playoffs berth. Their next challenge is a crucial away game against the Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens on May 16, followed by a high-stakes final league clash against the Chennai Super Kings in Ahmedabad on May 21.
If Sudharsan continues his current trajectory, the national selectors will find it increasingly difficult to overlook his credentials. In a format that values aggressive intent balanced with technical stability, Sai Sudharsan represents the modern, refined version of an Indian T20 batter. Whether he earns his maiden cap remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: his performance on the field is doing all the talking.
