The Evolution of a Leader

In the high-pressure environment of the Indian Premier League, few roles are as scrutinized as the captaincy of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). As the franchise continues its stellar campaign in IPL 2026, Rajat Patidar has emerged not just as a prolific run-scorer, but as a composed leader. Having led the team to their maiden title last year, Patidar is currently proving that his success was no fluke, amassing 337 runs at a blistering strike rate of nearly 193 this season.

The Kohli Influence

Despite his own growing stature, Patidar remains grounded in his respect for the game’s greats. When asked about his inspirations, he was quick to point toward the former India captain and RCB icon, Virat Kohli. For Patidar, Kohli remains the ultimate idol, particularly due to his unmatched energy levels on the field.

Speaking ahead of the crucial clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Patidar remarked, “I like his energy. There is nothing I don’t like. He’s my idol.” This admission highlights the enduring impact Kohli continues to have on the younger generation of Indian cricketers, both through his professional achievements and his relentless passion for the game.

Defining a Unique Leadership Style

Leading a franchise with the history and massive fan following of RCB is a daunting task, especially when following in the footsteps of legends like Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble, and Virat Kohli. However, Patidar is adamant about carving his own path rather than attempting to replicate his predecessors.

“It was crucial not to copy any of the predecessors,” Patidar noted. Instead of mimicking past captains, he has focused on synthesizing the best traits of those he has worked with. A significant influence on his leadership mindset has been former South African captain Faf du Plessis. Patidar credits du Plessis with teaching him the importance of player management, noting, “I was very influenced by how he spoke to and gave importance to each player. He was confident; his body language conveyed authority on the ground.”

Mentorship and Tactical Preparation

Patidar’s growth is also deeply rooted in the technical and mental training he received under former Madhya Pradesh coach Chandrakant Pandit. According to the RCB captain, the time spent under Pandit was transformative. “Chandu sir taught me how meticulously you can prepare for a cricket game and how deeply you can study it,” he explained. “He has played for 20 years and then coached for another 20. His tactical strength was eye-opening for me.”

These lessons in preparation have clearly paid dividends, allowing Patidar to approach the game with a level of analytical depth that sets him apart from many of his peers.

Facing the Best in the Business

Beyond his leadership duties, Patidar remains a batter who respects the challenges of the modern game. When asked to identify the toughest bowlers he has faced, he did not hesitate to name India’s premier speedster, Jasprit Bumrah, and the enigmatic West Indies spinner, Sunil Narine. Identifying these two world-class operators as his biggest challenges underscores the level of competition he navigates daily in the IPL.

The Road Ahead

As the RCB looks to maintain their momentum in the IPL 2026 playoffs, the team appears to be in safe hands. Rajat Patidar is not just a tactical captain; he is a student of the game who balances the intense discipline instilled by mentors like Chandrakant Pandit with the inclusive leadership style he observed in Faf du Plessis. With a clear head, a deep respect for his idols, and a relentless drive to improve, Patidar continues to lead the Royal Challengers Bengaluru toward what they hope will be another memorable trophy run. The balance of individual brilliance and team-first mentality will undoubtedly be the key as they face the final hurdles of the 2026 season.
