The Controversy Behind Rajasthan Royals’ IPL 2026 Exit

The conclusion of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season has left more than just disappointment in the Rajasthan Royals (RR) camp; it has ignited a firestorm of controversy. Following their defeat in Qualifier 2 against the Gujarat Titans (GT), the RR management leveled serious accusations against English all-rounder Sam Curran, alleging that the player misrepresented his physical condition to bypass the tournament.

The match itself was a high-stakes thriller. Despite a magnificent 47-ball 96 from the young sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, which helped RR reach a competitive total of 214/6, the team failed to defend the score. The Gujarat Titans, driven by a brilliant maiden century from Shubman Gill and a prolific knock from Sai Sudharsan, chased down the target in 18.4 overs, effectively ending the Royals’ title ambitions.

Kumar Sangakkara Speaks Out on Sam Curran

In the aftermath of the defeat, RR head coach Kumar Sangakkara did not hold back his frustrations regarding the squad’s composition and the absence of Sam Curran. The franchise had previously traded Sanju Samson to acquire the English star, viewing him as a cornerstone of their tactical plans. However, Curran opted out of the 2026 season, citing a suspected groin issue following his participation in the T20 World Cup.

“We were told that Sam Curran had a season-ending injury. But I think I saw him playing for Surrey for two or three games now. So that was disappointing. We would have loved to have had him here playing for us,” Sangakkara stated during the post-match press conference. The RR management had been forced to sign Dasun Shanaka as a replacement, a move that proved insufficient in replacing the specific utility value Curran provides.

The Conflict: IPL vs. T20 Blast

The tension peaked when it was revealed that Sam Curran has been actively participating in the T20 Blast for Surrey. His appearance in the domestic English tournament, which coincided with the business end of the IPL, cast serious doubt on the legitimacy of his injury claims. While Curran has notably been playing solely as a batter and leading his side, the statistics show he has been in excellent form, amassing 141 runs at an average of 70.50 and a strike rate of 143.88, including a top score of 71 not out.

The Impact on Rajasthan Royals’ Campaign

Throughout the 2026 season, RR relied heavily on their top order. While Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Dhruv Jurel performed admirably, the middle-order depth remained a significant concern. The team struggled to find a consistent finisher, with players like Shimron Hetmyer and Dasun Shanaka failing to bridge the gap. Curran’s absence deprived the team of a crucial all-round option who could have balanced the side and supported Jofra Archer in the bowling department.

Will the BCCI Intervene?

As the news circulates, questions regarding potential BCCI intervention are mounting. The Indian cricket board has previously discussed strict measures against overseas players who withdraw from the IPL shortly before the season commences. However, the Curran case presents a legal grey area. Because his withdrawal was attributed to a medical condition, the player and his management could easily argue that his recovery was accelerated during his time away from the IPL. As it stands, the BCCI has yet to issue an official statement, but the optics of a player skipping the world’s premier T20 league to play domestic cricket elsewhere have certainly damaged the relationship between the franchise and the player. Whether this leads to sanctions or simply a stern warning remains to be seen as the off-season begins.
