Prasidh replaces Siraj for Ireland and England T20Is: Squad Changes
BCCI Prioritizes Player Longevity with Key Squad Adjustment
In a strategic move designed to protect their bowling assets ahead of a grueling international calendar, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced a significant change to their T20I squads. Fast bowler Mohammed Siraj has been withdrawn from the upcoming series against Ireland and England. In his place, selectors have named his Gujarat Titans (GT) teammate, Prasidh Krishna.
This decision underscores the team management’s ongoing commitment to managing player workloads. Modern cricket schedules demand extreme physical resilience, and the BCCI has taken a proactive approach to prevent injuries to key players before major campaigns.
Official Statement from the BCCI Medical Team
The national cricket board clarified the reasoning behind Siraj’s absence in an official media release. According to the board, the decision was made after comprehensive assessments of the player’s physical state.
“Following discussions between the BCCI Medical Team and the Team Management, Siraj has been advised a period of rest as part of his workload management programme,” the BCCI stated. “The decision has been taken as a precautionary measure to ensure adequate recovery ahead of a long international season.”
With India facing assignments across multiple formats in the coming months, giving established pacers adequate downtime is seen as vital for maintaining peak physical performance levels.
A Golden Opportunity for Prasidh Krishna
For Prasidh Krishna, this call-up represents a vital opportunity to re-establish his credentials in the shortest format of the game. The tall fast bowler, known for his ability to extract steep bounce from any surface, has had a relatively brief T20I career so far. He has represented India in five T20Is, claiming eight wickets. However, his economy rate of 11 indicates an area that requires refinement at the international level.
Prasidh’s last T20I appearance for India was in November 2023, during a home series against Australia in Guwahati. Since then, he has worked hard on his fitness and variation. His selection for the T20I leg of the European tour comes alongside his inclusion in the ODI squad for the upcoming three-match series against Afghanistan, which is scheduled to begin on June 13. Notably, Siraj was omitted from that ODI squad as well, highlighting the targeted nature of his rest period.
Recent Outings and IPL Workloads
Both Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna have been highly active in recent weeks. The duo recently featured in India’s red-ball victory against Afghanistan in New Chandigarh, showing their versatility across formats.
Their workloads during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season also played a significant role in the medical team’s recent assessment. Siraj was a heavily utilized asset for the Gujarat Titans, featuring in 17 matches throughout the tournament. Prasidh, on the other hand, played 12 games during GT’s impressive run to the final. The intense nature of the IPL, combined with subsequent international travel, made Siraj an obvious candidate for scheduled rest.
India’s Demanding Calendar Ahead
The T20I series in Ireland and England marks the beginning of an incredibly busy period for the Indian men’s cricket team. Following the conclusion of the T20I matches, India will transition directly into a One-Day International (ODI) series against England.
The action does not stop there. In the subsequent months, India has scheduled bilateral tours to Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka, and New Zealand. Managing the physical condition of the fast-bowling unit will remain a top priority for the coaching staff during these consecutive tours.
The European leg begins in earnest on June 26, when India takes on Ireland in the first of two T20Is in Belfast. The second match will take place on June 28. Following the brief stop in Ireland, the team will travel to England for a high-intensity five-match T20I series scheduled from July 1 to July 11.
