Having been awarded the rights following the team’s success in the previous edition, the city was prepared to host both the summit clash and a playoff encounter. However, on May 8, the landscape changed entirely when the BCCI confirmed that the final would be moved to the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, with the remaining playoff matches distributed between Dharamshala and Mullanpur.
The official word from IPL authorities cited “certain requirements from the local association and authorities that were beyond the scope of BCCI’s established guidelines and protocols” as the driving force behind this decision. This statement left many questions unanswered, fueling widespread speculation among fans and analysts alike.
The Ticket Controversy: Political Interference or Operational Clash?
Central to the narrative surrounding the venue change was the heated debate over complimentary IPL tickets. Reports surfaced regarding a “higher-than-normal” demand for tickets by elected representatives. The issue gained traction when Congress MLA Vijayanand Kashappanavar publicly suggested that MLAs should be treated as “VIPs” and provided with complimentary tickets, bypassing standard queues. While Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar later clarified that three tickets would be facilitated for legislators, the move triggered allegations of misuse, which were subsequently denied by Home Minister G. Parameshwara.
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia noted that the operational friction regarding these ticket demands contributed to the loss of the playoff hosting rights, highlighting a disconnect between local political expectations and the BCCI’s standard operating procedures for major tournaments.
Ambitious Redevelopment Plans

KSCA President Venkatesh Prasad confirmed that work is already underway to modernize the stadium, with an eye toward future international standards. Prasad revealed that the association has attracted interest from 28 world-renowned architects, all eager to participate in the redesign of the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. “We are in the process of shortlisting the final team of architects,” Prasad stated during the launch event for the Maharaja and Maharani Trophies. This modernization effort extends beyond structural capacity; the association is also committed to upgrading the technological infrastructure. New, state-of-the-art LED lighting systems are slated for installation not only at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium but also at the Srikantadatta Narasimha Raja Wadeyar Cricket Stadium in Mysuru and the KSCA Stadium in Hubballi.
