Drama Erupts as KSCA Hits Back at BCCI Over IPL 2026 Final Snub

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season has been nothing short of spectacular on the field, but off-field developments are now taking center stage. The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) has officially voiced its frustration and disappointment following the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) decision to relocate the IPL 2026 final from Bengaluru to Ahmedabad. The move has sparked a wave of debate within the cricketing community, especially given the historical significance of the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium as a premier cricket destination in India.

KSCA Expresses Deep Disappointment Over Venue Shift

The KSCA was reportedly blindsided by the BCCI’s decision to award the final to the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. For weeks, reports had suggested that Bengaluru was the leading contender to host the season’s grand finale. The association, led by former Indian legendary pacer and current KSCA President Venkatesh Prasad, had been working tirelessly to ensure the venue was ready for the high-stakes match.

In an official statement released shortly after the BCCI’s announcement, the KSCA noted: “At the outset, KSCA expresses its disappointment that the IPL Playoff matches have been allotted to other centres. KSCA President and legendary Indian cricketer Venkatesh Prasad was personally in touch with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in this regard and had also formally conveyed KSCA’s preparedness, willingness, and keen interest in hosting the IPL Playoffs at the iconic M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.”

The association further highlighted that the current season matches held in Bengaluru have been lauded for their execution. “The IPL matches conducted in Bengaluru during the current season were widely appreciated for their smooth execution, crowd management, operational efficiency, and overall spectator experience, reaffirming KSCA’s capability to successfully host marquee fixtures of such scale and importance,” the statement added.

BCCI Cites ‘Operational and Logistical’ Hurdles

While the KSCA’s frustration is evident, the BCCI has defended its decision by pointing toward logistical complexities. In an official update posted on the IPL website, the board clarified why the final was moved from the Karnataka capital. The BCCI stated that while Bengaluru was the original choice, certain “requirements from the local association and authorities” fell outside the scope of the BCCI’s established protocols.

The board’s statement read: “Bengaluru was originally designated to host the Final. However, owing to certain requirements from the local association and authorities that were beyond the scope of BCCI’s established guidelines and protocols, the venue has been shifted and reassigned.” This explanation has raised eyebrows, as the KSCA claims that no specific reasons were formally communicated to them prior to the public announcement.

IPL 2026 Playoff Schedule and Venues Confirmed

With the final now set for Ahmedabad, the BCCI has also confirmed the locations for the other critical playoff fixtures. Interestingly, the home grounds of the Punjab Kings—the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala and the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur—will host the Eliminator and the two Qualifiers.

  • Qualifier 1: May 26 – HPCA Cricket Stadium, Dharamshala
  • Eliminator: May 27 – Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, Mullanpur
  • Qualifier 2: May 29 – Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, Mullanpur
  • Grand Final: May 31 – Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad

The Dominance of Ahmedabad in IPL Finals

The decision to host the final in Ahmedabad means the Narendra Modi Stadium will host its fourth IPL final in the last five editions of the tournament. This pattern has drawn criticism from various regional associations who feel that the distribution of marquee matches is becoming increasingly centralized. While Ahmedabad offers a massive seating capacity of over 110,000, critics argue that the atmosphere and legacy of venues like the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium should not be overlooked for sheer volume.

The KSCA concluded its response by acknowledging the BCCI’s authority, despite their clear dissatisfaction. “While the specific reasons for the same have not been formally communicated to KSCA, we fully respect the prerogative and decision-making authority of the BCCI in this regard,” the association noted. As the tournament heads toward its business end, the tension between one of India’s most prestigious local associations and the national board adds a layer of intrigue to an already thrilling season.
