Kishan spent seven formative years at Mumbai Indians, an organization synonymous with legendary players and intense pressure. Rayudu, who himself spent a significant tenure with MI between 2009 and 2017, understands the psychological weight of playing for such a franchise. Speaking on ESPNcricinfo Time Out, Rayudu noted that while he managed to navigate the pressure by remaining indifferent to the surrounding stardom, the situation was vastly different for a younger, developing talent like Kishan.
“For someone like him, growing up in a franchise like Mumbai, he wants to be a superstar—he is a superstar in his own right now—but back then to compete against all the stars around him would have been very, very tough,” Rayudu explained. The veteran suggested that the challenge for young players in such environments is learning how to balance the intensity of the game with personal growth, a lesson he believes Kishan has learned through experience.
Mastering the Mental Game
Beyond the technical aspects of cricket, Rayudu highlighted the importance of mental conditioning. He remarked, “Those guys know when to switch on in terms of their game, when to come back. But a lot of these young boys don’t know how to switch off and how to switch on. That’s a big challenge, and I’m sure he has learned and he has learned it the hard way.” This newfound ability to manage his focus has clearly translated into his on-field performance during the current campaign.

Kishan’s statistics in IPL 2026 reflect a player at the height of his powers. Currently sitting fifth in the race for the Orange Cap, he has accumulated 569 runs across 14 matches, maintaining a solid average of 40.64 and an explosive strike rate of 178.36. His recent match-winning performance against Royal Challengers Bengaluru—where he smashed 79 off just 46 balls—marked his sixth 50-plus score of the season. To put that into perspective, Kishan had never managed more than three such scores in any previous IPL season, highlighting a significant leap in consistency.
Technical Maturity and Leadership
Rayudu also identified clear improvements in Kishan’s batting repertoire, specifically regarding his decision-making. “His shot selection has improved big time,” Rayudu observed. “In his initial years, we have seen him make some wrong decisions in terms of shot selection. But here we saw him making the right call most of the time.”
Furthermore, the veteran attributed a portion of this tactical refinement to Kishan’s experiences in leadership. Taking on the mantle of captaincy for Jharkhand appears to have sharpened his understanding of the game. “I think his captaincy for Jharkhand made him realize a lot of things about his own game as well,” Rayudu added. “Sometimes when you get captaincy, people transform into better batsmen, and he is one of them who has massively improved in terms of clarity.”
As Kishan continues his journey with Sunrisers Hyderabad, his growth serves as a testament to the idea that sometimes, stepping out of a comfort zone—even one as successful as Mumbai Indians—is the necessary ingredient for reaching the next level of sporting excellence.
