“Kagiso Rabada is proper fire, but Jofra Archer….” – Ex-India opener’s massive – IPL 2026 Qualifier 2: Aakash Chopra Analyzes the Battle of the Pacers
The High-Voltage Clash at Mullanpur
The stage is set for a thrilling conclusion to the IPL 2026 playoffs. On Friday, May 29, the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, New Chandigarh, will play host to a high-pressure Qualifier 2 encounter. Gujarat Titans (GT) are set to lock horns with the Rajasthan Royals (RR), with the winner earning a coveted spot in the final against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).
Ahead of this decisive fixture, former Indian opener and renowned cricket commentator Aakash Chopra has turned his focus to the battle of the fast bowlers. The spotlight is firmly on the sheer pace and intensity brought to the table by Gujarat’s Kagiso Rabada and Rajasthan’s Jofra Archer.
The Return of Raw Pace
Chopra believes that both franchises have undergone a strategic shift regarding their premier quicks. Observing the performance of both bowlers throughout the season, he suggests that coaching staff members—specifically Ashish Nehra for the Titans and Shane Bond for the Royals—have instructed their pacers to prioritize pace and hard lengths over the slower variations that previously cluttered their repertoires.
“GT have taken 31 Powerplay wickets, and RR aren’t too far behind with 29,” Chopra noted. “Kagiso Rabada is bowling like fire. The man is proper fire, but Jofra is no less. He is also hitting that 150 kph mark. I believe both bowling coaches have emphasized bowling length balls and staying away from the slower ones, which both were previously guilty of using too frequently.”
The statistics support this assessment. Rabada has been a cornerstone of the Titans’ attack, securing 26 wickets in 15 innings at an economy rate of 9.48. Meanwhile, Archer has been equally lethal for the Royals, claiming 24 wickets in 15 matches at an economy rate of 9.17. Their ability to hit the deck hard and maintain extreme velocity could be the defining factor in this knockout game.
The Tactical Spin Dilemma
While the focus is on the pacers, Chopra also raised an intriguing tactical point regarding the usage of Rashid Khan. The Afghan sensation is undoubtedly the Titans’ most valuable spin asset, yet he is rarely utilized during the Powerplay. Chopra questions whether the team should alter this approach if the Rajasthan opening duo of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Yashasvi Jaiswal get off to a flying start.
“What about Rashid Khan? He has taken wickets, but he rarely bowls in the Powerplay. If Sooryavanshi and Jaiswal don’t fall early, do you want to introduce him slightly ahead of schedule? It is certainly something the team management must consider,” Chopra explained. Rashid has taken 19 wickets this season at an economy rate of 8.77, and his ability to dismantle partnerships in the middle overs remains unparalleled.
The Emergence of Yash Raj Punja
Chopra also took a moment to laud a rising star from the Rajasthan Royals ranks: leg-spinner Yash Raj Punja. As the first UAE-born cricketer to feature in the IPL, the 19-year-old has flown under the radar despite delivering consistent performances throughout the campaign.
“While Rashid Khan brings massive experience to the table, Yash Raj Punja has been a revelation,” Chopra observed. “His performance has been praiseworthy. He bowls from a high release point and possesses excellent variation. He doesn’t just rely on pace; he knows how to take wickets by slowing things down when needed.” Punja has claimed nine wickets in seven innings this season, maintaining an economy rate of 8.92, marking him as a talent to watch in the pressure cooker of a playoff game.
As the teams prepare for the final push, the contrasting styles of the veteran speedsters and the cleverness of the spinners will likely decide who makes the trip to the final. With so much talent on display, Friday’s encounter promises to be a masterclass in modern T20 strategy.
