A Difficult Chapter for a Former Speedster

The cricketing fraternity has rallied around former Indian pace bowler Salil Ankola, who is currently undergoing treatment at a rehabilitation center to address severe depression. The 58-year-old, who once shared the international stage with legends like Sachin Tendulkar, has faced a challenging period marked by personal loss and subsequent health struggles.

Seeking Help and the Path to Recovery

According to reports, the decision to seek professional help was a proactive step taken by Ankola himself. His wife, Ria, spoke candidly about the situation, highlighting the profound impact of the passing of his mother in October 2024. The grief proved overwhelming, leading to a decline in his overall physical and mental well-being. Ria noted that the family remains optimistic, as the treatment has already yielded positive results. “He is a fighter, and he will soon return to the game he loves,” she stated, emphasizing the strength and support system he has around him.

The Early Promise of a Fast Bowling Talent

Salil Ankola’s rise through the domestic ranks in Mumbai was nothing short of meteoric. Tall, aggressive, and possessing a deceptive pace, he was widely regarded as the next great fast-bowling hope for India. His Test debut came during the historic tour of Pakistan in 1989, a series famously remembered for the simultaneous debut of Sachin Tendulkar. While his international career did not reach the heights many envisioned, his impact on the domestic scene left an indelible mark on Indian cricket history.

Career Statistics and Challenges

Ankola’s international journey was unfortunately plagued by persistent fitness issues. Over an eight-year span, he played one Test match and 20 One Day Internationals (ODIs). His ODI career saw him claim 13 wickets, with a career-best performance of 3/33 against South Africa in 1993. Despite being included in the 1996 ODI World Cup squad, injury and form concerns limited his opportunities to showcase his true potential. His retirement at the age of 28 marked a premature end to a career that many had hoped would fill the void left by stalwarts like Kapil Dev.

Life Beyond the Boundary

Following his departure from professional cricket, Ankola transitioned into a successful career in the entertainment industry. He featured in several television serials and appeared in notable films, including the 2000 box office success Kurukshetra, where he starred alongside Sanjay Dutt. His presence in the inaugural season of the reality show Bigg Boss further showcased his public reach beyond the pitch.

A Return to His Roots

Despite his ventures into media and entertainment, Ankola never truly left the game behind. His passion for cricket remained, eventually leading him back to administration. In 2020, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) appointed him as the chief selector, where he played a key role in shaping the state’s talent pipeline. His administrative journey later saw him serve on the national selection committee from early 2023 until August 2024. As he focuses on his health and recovery, the well-wishes from teammates, fans, and colleagues continue to serve as a reminder of the respect he has earned throughout his multifaceted career.
