England Squad for New Zealand Test Announced: Stokes Returns, Three New Caps Called Up

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has named a dynamic 15-player squad for the opening Test against New Zealand, set to begin on June 4 at Lord’s. The selection brings both fresh energy and a long-awaited comeback, with Ben Stokes officially returning to Test cricket after a lengthy absence.

Three Fresh Faces in the Squad

The most striking aspect of the squad announcement is the inclusion of three uncapped players: Emilio Gay, Sonny Baker, and James Rew. Their selection signals a shift toward building for the future while maintaining competitive depth.

  • Emilio Gay – The talented top-order batter from Essex has been consistent in the County Championship, earning his maiden call-up with a string of composed performances.
  • Sonny Baker – A promising young fast bowler from Hampshire, Baker brings pace and aggression, qualities the ECB is keen to nurture in red-ball cricket.
  • James Rew – A left-handed wicketkeeper-batter from Somerset, Rew has impressed selectors with his calm temperament and ability to stabilize the middle order.

Ben Stokes Set for Comeback

The return of Ben Stokes as captain and all-rounder is the headline news. Stokes sustained a serious facial injury in February and has been on the sidelines since. His recent appearances for Durham in the County Championship indicate full recovery, and the ECB has confirmed he will lead England in the first Test.

“Stokes’ presence is not just about runs or wickets—it’s about leadership and resilience,” said England Men’s Managing Director Rob Key. “He’s been through a tough period, but his determination to return at the highest level is inspiring.”

Ollie Pope and Jofra Archer Left Out

In a surprising omission, former vice-captain Ollie Pope has been left out of the squad. Despite his experience, the selectors appear to be experimenting with batting combinations, giving opportunities to emerging players.

Meanwhile, Jofra Archer remains unavailable for red-ball action. Although he is currently playing for Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2026, the ECB confirmed he is not yet match-fit for Test cricket.

“Jofra Archer is unavailable for the first Test. He continues to play in the IPL, and it is about building him up for red-ball cricket after a long six months on the road,” Key explained.

IPL Players to Rejoin After Tournament

Two England squad members—Rehan Ahmed and Jacob Bethell—are currently competing in the IPL. Ahmed plays for Delhi Capitals, while Bethell has been a key performer for Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Since the IPL 2026 concludes on May 31, both players are expected to rejoin the squad ahead of the June 4 start date.

Rehan Ahmed and Matthew Fisher make a return to the Test fold, with Fisher’s left-arm seam offering variety in bowling attack discussions.
