CSK’s IPL 2026 Exit: Ravichandran Ashwin Urges Move Beyond MS Dhoni Era

The End of a Cycle for Chennai Super Kings

The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) concluded their IPL 2026 campaign in disappointing fashion, suffering a massive 89-run defeat at the hands of the Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium. This loss, which came during match number 66 of the tournament, marked the team’s third consecutive defeat, officially eliminating them from playoff contention. With only six wins from 14 matches, the five-time champions finished seventh on the points table, joining the Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants on the sidelines.

Ashwin Calls for a Strategic Rethink

As the dust settles on a challenging season, Ravichandran Ashwin has provided a candid assessment of what went wrong for the franchise. The former Indian all-rounder emphasized that the current squad lacks the necessary balance to compete in the modern, high-intensity landscape of T20 cricket. According to Ashwin, the management must prioritize quality over sentiment, particularly within the bowling unit.

“Honestly, I will say this openly, CSK has to invest in quality. They have to invest in quality cricketers. I mean, make a quality team. With experience. Bowling experience. Variety in fast bowlers. Variety in spinners. A team has to be formed in a good way,” Ashwin stated during a recent discussion on his YouTube channel.

Transitioning Beyond the MS Dhoni Era

Perhaps the most poignant part of Ashwin’s commentary was his insistence that the team must look toward the future. The legendary spinner noted that clinging to the past will only hinder the team’s evolution. “This is not Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings. Not at all. That time has changed. And you have to keep in mind that success will come. But it will come slowly,” he added. This sentiment reflects the reality that for a team to remain competitive, it must constantly adapt, a process that requires moving beyond the icons who once defined its culture.

This season was particularly difficult as it marked the first time in his illustrious IPL career that MS Dhoni did not feature in a single match. Struggling with a persistent calf strain, the legendary wicketkeeper-batter remained on the sidelines for the duration of the tournament, leaving a void in leadership and experience that the younger squad found difficult to fill under Ruturaj Gaikwad’s captaincy.

Bright Spots Amidst the Struggle

Despite the overall failure, Ashwin found room to praise individual performances, specifically highlighting the efforts of Shivam Dube and Kartik Sharma. Dube’s middle-order batting provided some much-needed aggression for the team, though Ashwin pointed out that the squad’s construction appeared ill-suited for the unique conditions of their home ground at Chepauk.

Regarding Kartik Sharma, Ashwin was particularly impressed with his technical approach. “Kartik Sharma has that ability. He plays the spinner a little late, he plays inside-out shots, he uses his feet in front. Today’s batters, if you count them on one hand, how many have the ability to use their feet while batting?” This tactical awareness and technical proficiency are exactly the kinds of qualities Ashwin believes the franchise needs to prioritize in the upcoming auctions.

Looking Toward IPL 2027

The 2026 season has been a harsh wake-up call for the Chennai management. Finishing with a net run rate of -0.345 and only 12 points, it is clear that the current roster requires a significant overhaul. As the franchise prepares for the 2027 season, the blueprint provided by experts like Ashwin suggests that a focus on building a more versatile, high-quality, and youthful squad will be the only way to return to the summit of the Indian Premier League. The departure from the familiar faces of the past might be painful for fans, but it appears to be a necessary step for the survival and long-term success of the Chennai Super Kings.
