BCCI Cracks Down on IPL Protocols: Honey Trapping Risks and New SOPs
The BCCI Takes Decisive Action Following IPL 2026 Controversies
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has entered a high-alert phase to safeguard the integrity of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Following a string of high-profile incidents during the 2026 season, the governing body has issued a comprehensive seven-page directive that serves as a stern warning to all franchises, players, and support staff. The message is clear: professional standards must be upheld, or face severe consequences including suspension and legal action.
The Catalyst for Change: Recent Breaches
The push for stricter governance follows two specific incidents involving the Rajasthan Royals. During a match against the Punjab Kings in New Chandigarh, team manager Romi Bhinder was fined INR 1 lakh for unauthorized use of a mobile phone in the dugout, a direct violation of established protocols. This was compounded by an incident involving Rajasthan Royals captain Riyan Parag, who was observed vaping in the dressing room. Parag was subsequently penalized by the match referee with a fine equal to 25 percent of his match fee. These events forced the BCCI to explicitly ban the use of all vapes and e-cigarettes at every IPL venue.
Addressing the Honey Trap Menace
Beyond dugout discipline, the BCCI’s Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) has raised significant concerns regarding the unauthorized access of outsiders to players. The board has identified a growing trend where social media influencers, acquaintances, and friends have been granted proximity to players on team buses and within secure hotel environments. The BCCI has warned that such lapses create fertile ground for honey trapping, extortion, and the leakage of sensitive team strategies and match combinations.
To mitigate these risks, the BCCI is formalizing new operational standards to ensure the security of the tournament. The board emphasizes that the high-profile nature of the IPL necessitates a level of caution that has previously been overlooked.
The Formation of the IPL Operations Task Force
In a move to enforce these mandates, the BCCI is establishing a joint IPL Operations Task Force. This unit will be tasked with regular inspections of restricted zones and hotel accommodations. Key aspects of the new policy include:
- Visitor Restrictions: No unauthorized individual will be allowed into a player’s room without explicit prior approval from the Team Manager.
- Mandatory Meeting Spaces: Any interaction with guests, regardless of personal relationship, must be conducted in public hotel areas such as lobbies or lounges under supervision.
- Movement Control: Players and support staff are now required to obtain permission from security liaison officers before exiting the team hotel.
- Dugout Integrity: Owners are strictly prohibited from interacting with players during the course of a match, and mobile devices remain banned for all personnel in the dugout.
- Credentialing: The display of official ID cards is mandatory at all times within hotels, venues, and during practice sessions.
Accountability and Consequences
The BCCI has placed the onus of compliance squarely on the franchises. Teams are required to hold internal meetings within 48 hours of receiving the official letter to ensure every player and staff member signs a document acknowledging the new rules. The secretary of the BCCI, Devajit Saikia, noted that any breach must be reported immediately to the IPL Operations Team.
“Franchises will have to remain on alert and proactive to deal with the risks,” Saikia stated. “Any breach will have to be reported to the IPL Operations Team or the relevant authority at the earliest. The BCCI trusts that all franchises will follow the SOPs and take steps to ensure that the integrity and the reputation of the Indian Premier League are not harmed.”
As the tournament progresses, the focus remains on restoring discipline. The message from the board is unequivocal: the reputation of the IPL is paramount, and any further deviation from these standards will lead to immediate disciplinary action. The league is determined to prove that professionalism is non-negotiable in the world’s most popular cricket tournament.
