The Return of Test Cricket to Mirpur

The cricketing world turns its attention to Bangladesh this May as the Tigers host Pakistan for the first of a two-match Test series at the historic Sher-E-Bangla Stadium in Mirpur. Commencing on May 8, this encounter marks the return of the longest format to Bangladeshi soil for the first time since November 2025. As both teams look to bolster their positions in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle, the stakes have never been higher.

Bangladesh currently sits 8th on the WTC table, while Pakistan occupies 5th place. Having famously swept Pakistan in their own backyard in 2024, the hosts will be looking to complete a rare home-and-away double—a feat that would further cement their growing reputation in Test cricket.

The Top Order: Consistency and Experience

The foundation of the Bangladesh innings will likely rest on the shoulders of Mahmudul Hasan Joy, Shadman Islam, and Mominul Haque. Mahmudul Hasan Joy enters this series in exceptional form, having been the standout performer during the November 2025 series against Ireland, where he amassed 265 runs across three innings. Partnering him is the seasoned Shadman Islam, a player with 26 Tests of experience who provided stability with two fifties in that same series.

At number three, Mominul Haque remains the anchor of the batting unit. Closing in on the 5,000-run milestone in his 75th Test, Mominul is arguably one of the most technically sound batters in the country. His ability to build long innings will be crucial against a formidable Pakistani pace attack.

Middle Order and All-Rounders: The Engine Room

The middle order offers a perfect blend of leadership, grit, and versatility. Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, expected to return to the fold following a recent injury, will anchor the number four spot. Having excelled in recent ODI engagements against New Zealand, his return to the red-ball setup is a significant boost.

Mushfiqur Rahim, the heartbeat of the team and the first Bangladeshi to reach 100 Test caps, remains an automatic selection at number five. With over 6,500 runs and 13 centuries to his name, his experience is invaluable. He is followed by wicketkeeper-batter Litton Das, who continues to be a consistent presence in the lineup, and ODI captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who provides necessary balance as a genuine all-rounder. Mehidy, with over 2,000 runs and 200 wickets, serves as a vital cog in the team’s structure.

Rounding out the lower-middle order is the seasoned left-arm spinner Taijul Islam. Having recently overtaken Shakib Al Hasan as the country’s leading Test wicket-taker, Taijul brings immense control and the ability to contribute valuable runs with the tail.

The Pace Battery and Bowling Options

The pace department is headlined by the returning Taskin Ahmed. After missing recent Test action, his ability to generate pace and movement makes him a threat on any surface. He will be joined by the rising star Nahid Rana, who has been in sensational form following his recent success in the PSL 2026 and the ODIs against New Zealand. Completing the trio is the tall left-armer Shoriful Islam, who offers a distinct angle and has been impressive in maintaining economy throughout his Test career.

Tactically, the management may consider a variation depending on the nature of the surface. Should the Mirpur pitch offer significant assistance to spin, off-break bowler Nayeem Hasan could be drafted into the XI in place of Taskin Ahmed. With over 300 first-class wickets, Nayeem offers a reliable alternative if the conditions demand a spin-heavy attack to support the existing trio of tweakers.
