Delhi Capitals to Overhaul Coaching Staff and Leadership After IPL 2026 Disappointment

A Season of Underperformance

The Delhi Capitals find themselves in a precarious position as the 19th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) nears its conclusion. Currently sitting in seventh place with only 10 points from 12 matches, the franchise is effectively out of the playoff race. Much like the Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants, the Capitals have failed to live up to expectations, resulting in a somber mood within the camp and among the franchise owners.

Reports emerging from the aftermath of this disappointing campaign indicate that the management is ready to press the reset button. The decision-makers are reportedly planning a comprehensive overhaul of the coaching staff, signaling that significant changes are imminent as the team looks toward the next season.

The Future of Axar Patel as Captain

At the heart of the restructuring discussions is the future of Axar Patel. While long considered a reliable all-rounder, his stint as the leader of the Delhi Capitals has come under intense scrutiny. According to industry sources, Patel’s leadership has been heavily reliant on input from coaches Hemang Badani and Venugopal Rao, rather than independent decision-making. This lack of clear on-field authority has led to a stagnant tactical approach that many feel contributed to the team’s failure.

Statistically, the numbers do not paint a flattering picture for the skipper. In 9 innings, Patel has managed just 100 runs at a strike rate of 112.50, with a single knock of 56 runs accounting for the majority of his output. His bowling, usually his strongest suit, has also been underwhelming. In 12 games, he has bowled only 36 overs, claiming 10 wickets at an economy rate of 8.08. Critics and fans alike have noted that he appeared to under-bowl himself throughout the tournament, further fueling questions regarding his tactical acumen as a captain.

Ownership Dynamics and Operational Shifts

The internal changes are also tied to the rotating ownership structure between JSW and GMR. With the power of operation shifting from GMR to Parth Jindal’s JSW for the 20th season, there is a clear mandate to improve results. An IPL source close to the developments confirmed that the current coaching staff is unlikely to be retained, stating, “It will be a miracle if he (Axar) manages to get the captain’s armband next year. The coaching staff will also not be retained.”

Management and Talent Utilization

Beyond the leadership issues, the franchise has been heavily criticized for its handling of emerging talent. The decision-making process has been labeled as inconsistent, with promising players like Abhishek Porel being sidelined and all-rounder Madhav Tiwari failing to receive consistent opportunities. Furthermore, the handling of Sahil Parakh has drawn ire; the team appeared to expect immediate results akin to a finished product, rather than providing the patient backing and development required for a young, talented prospect.

While the squad boasts several high-quality players, the collective effort has failed to materialize. KL Rahul remains the lone bright spot in the batting lineup, having accumulated over 450 runs throughout the season, standing as the only consistent performer in an otherwise disjointed team. The inability of the coaching staff to extract maximum performance from the roster has led to widespread frustration among former players and supporters, ultimately necessitating the drastic measures now being discussed. As the dust settles on IPL 2026, it is evident that a new direction is required for the Delhi Capitals to return to their competitive roots.
