New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has officially announced a 19-member Test squad tasked with navigating the challenging overseas conditions of Ireland and England. As the Black Caps look to solidify their position in the 2025-27 ICC World Test Championship (WTC) cycle, this squad reflects a strategic blend of experienced campaigners and promising new talent.
The journey begins with a one-off Test against Ireland at the Civil Service Cricket Club, scheduled for May 27. Following this encounter, the team will transition to London for a high-stakes three-match Test series against England, commencing on June 4.
Dean Foxcroft Earns Maiden Call-up
One of the most notable inclusions in the squad is the all-rounder Dean Foxcroft. His selection comes on the back of a stellar Plunket Shield campaign and consistently strong performances during the recent white-ball tour of Bangladesh. Foxcroft has expressed immense pride in reaching this career milestone, describing the call-up as a dream realized since his youth. His ability to contribute with both bat and ball will be crucial for the team’s balance in the coming weeks.
The Return of the Pace Battery
A major focus for Head Coach Rob Walter has been the rehabilitation and return of New Zealand’s premier fast bowlers. The squad sees the return of Kyle Jamieson, who has been sidelined since February 2024 with a back stress fracture. As the quickest Kiwi bowler to reach 50 Test wickets, Jamieson brings a unique edge and significant experience to the bowling unit. While the squad is strong, there are notable absences. Jacob Duffy, a recipient of the Sir Richard Hadlee Medal, will miss the tour to support his wife during the birth of their first child. Additionally, Michael Bracewell has opted to prioritize white-ball cricket for the immediate future. Tom Blundell retains his role as the primary wicketkeeper.
