Ravi Ashwin discloses his first-choice wicketkeeper for India’s ODI World Cup 2027
India still have plenty of time before the 2027 ODI World Cup, but the conversations around the squad have already started heating up. One debate that keeps coming back is the wicketkeeper’s slot. It looks like a single position on paper, but in reality, it has turned into a four-way battle that refuses to settle. Every contender brings a distinct set of skills to the table, making the decision incredibly complicated for the team management and selectors alike.

KL Rahul, Ishan Kishan, Rishabh Pant, and Sanju Samson all remain in the mix. Each of them offers something different, which is exactly why this decision has become so tricky. KL Rahul brings control and calmness in pressure situations, along with safe keeping and the ability to float in the batting order. His experience in handling difficult situations makes him a highly reliable option in the middle order.
On the other hand, Ishan Kishan plays with intent from the get-go and has the potential to take the game early with his explosive left-handed batting. Sanju Samson adds timing and clean hitting to the mix, offering sheer elegance and the ability to clear the boundary with ease. Meanwhile, Rishabh Pant brings unpredictability and raw match-winning impact to the table, possessing the unique ability to turn a match completely in a short span of time.
Ashwin leans towards Rahul, but keeps the debate open
Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin recently shared his view on the discussion and placed KL Rahul ahead of the others for the wicketkeeper’s role in the 2027 World Cup. Speaking on his YouTube channel, he explained why Rahul looks like the most likely first-choice option, with Ishan Kishan fitting in as the primary backup.
“KL Rahul will be the first choice keeper and Ishan Kishan can probably get a boarding pass as the back-up for the World Cup. But I don’t think it’s fair to let go of Rishabh Pant this early, considering the World Cup will be in South Africa. Pant has performed decently in the middle-order in ODIs. Kishan played an outstanding knock but let’s not jump the gun,” Ravi Ashwin said.
However, Ashwin also made one thing clear: he does not want Rishabh Pant to be left out of the conversation too early. He pointed out that Pant still has time and still has value, especially with the World Cup expected to be played in South Africa, where aggressive batting can make a big difference on bouncy and fast pitches.
Analyzing the Tactical Nuances of the Contenders
Ashwin also praised Kishan’s ability to produce explosive innings but cautioned against judging long-term roles based on short bursts of form. One good knock, he suggested, should not decide a World Cup selection plan. Consistency over a longer period remains the ultimate metric for securing a spot in a major global tournament.
KL Rahul continues to stand out because of his flexibility. He adjusts to whatever the team needs at any given moment. He can anchor an innings, rebuild after early wickets, or even shift gears when quick runs are required. That kind of adaptability often becomes crucial in pressure-filled ICC tournaments where conditions can change rapidly.
In contrast, Pant brings a completely different energy. He does not always play safe, but when he gets going, his explosive style can dismantle any bowling attack. That X-factor is something very few players in world cricket offer, making him a player you cannot easily overlook.
Kishan and Samson add depth to the conversation, but both still carry questions around consistency at the highest level. While their peak performances are matches for the best in the world, maintaining that high standard over successive series will be key to solidifying their claims.
If experienced names like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli remain part of the setup, the batting line-up could look even more solid and experienced. But the wicketkeeper debate could quietly shape how the entire XI looks. It is not just about gloves anymore; it is about balance, tactical flexibility, and matching the right player to the conditions. For now, the race remains wide open, and that is exactly what makes the road to 2027 so fascinating.
