Bransgrove severs final ties with Hampshire as GMR complete acquisition
A New Era at the Utilita Bowl
The landscape of English county cricket has shifted significantly as Rod Bransgrove, the pivotal figure who transformed Hampshire Cricket from the brink of insolvency into a modern sporting powerhouse, has stepped down from his final administrative role. This development comes as the GMR Group officially completes its full acquisition of the club and its associated business entities, including the iconic Utilita Bowl stadium.
The Legacy of Rod Bransgrove
For nearly a quarter of a century, Bransgrove has been synonymous with the success and growth of Hampshire. At 75 years old, his departure marks the end of an era defined by bold vision and substantial financial commitment. During his stewardship, Bransgrove invested approximately £15 million into the club, a move that secured its future and facilitated its rise to prominence. One of his most notable achievements was the strategic move from the historic Northlands Road ground, which had served as the club’s home for 116 years, to the state-of-the-art facilities at what is now known as the Utilita Bowl.
Although Bransgrove stepped down as Hampshire chair in 2023, he remained a central figure, serving as Group Chairman and majority shareholder of Hampshire Sport & Leisure Holdings Limited. His orchestration of the deal with the GMR Group—the prominent co-owners of the Delhi Capitals—in 2024 set the stage for this final transition.
GMR Group Takes the Reins
The completion of the acquisition by GMR Group signals a global expansion for the club. The momentum continued into 2025, when the GMR Group valued the Hampshire-based Hundred franchise, Southern Brave, at an impressive £98 million as part of the ECB‘s equity sale. This valuation underscored the commercial viability and prestige that the club has cultivated under Bransgrove’s guidance.
Effective June 1, 2026, Kiran Kumar Grandhi, the Chairman of GMR Sports, has officially succeeded Bransgrove as group chair. Grandhi is widely recognized as the driving force behind GMR’s successful entry into the global sports sector, most notably managing the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League. His appointment is seen as a commitment to maintaining the club’s high standards while exploring new avenues for international growth.
Reflecting on a Quarter-Century of Growth
In his parting statement, Bransgrove expressed the depth of his connection to the organization. “This moment brings to a close a chapter that has meant more to me than words can express,” he noted. “What we have built at Hampshire has been a collective effort, driven by incredible people, loyal supporters and partners who believed in a shared vision.”
While his administrative duties have concluded, Bransgrove will maintain a presence at the club, having been appointed as Honorary Life President. Additionally, he will continue to serve on the board as a director and advisor for the next three years, ensuring a degree of continuity during this period of transition.
Future Outlook
Kiran Kumar Grandhi was quick to praise his predecessor, highlighting the “extraordinary leadership and vision” that defined Bransgrove’s tenure. He noted that Bransgrove’s stewardship not only turned the Utilita Bowl into a world-class destination but also established a culture of resilience and community pride. As GMR Group assumes full control, the focus shifts to how this global sports conglomerate will integrate Hampshire into its broader portfolio. Supporters can expect a continuation of the ambition that has characterized the club for the past twenty years, with Bransgrove confirming that he has “unequivocal confidence” that the club is in the safest of hands as it embarks on this exciting new chapter.
