Najmul Hossain Shanto Embraces Captaincy Challenge Ahead of Pakistan Tests
A New Chapter for Bangladesh Cricket
As the cricketing world turns its attention to the upcoming Test series between Bangladesh and Pakistan, all eyes are on the man at the helm: Najmul Hossain Shanto. The Bangladesh Test captain has opened up about his tenure, his philosophy on leadership, and the meticulous preparation that he believes will define his team’s performance on the field.
Reflecting on the 2024 Success
The memories of the 2024 tour of Pakistan remain a defining moment for this Bangladesh squad. Shanto points to that series as a benchmark for what his team is capable of achieving when they are properly prepared. He recalls the Rawalpindi Test with particular pride, noting that the team’s ability to recover from a precarious position of 26 for 6 was nothing short of extraordinary.
Reflecting on the experience, Shanto remarked, “I think what was best about the 2024 tour was our preparation. I remember that our players were very well prepared. In fact, I would say I had never seen such good preparation in my time as a cricketer. At the same time, I thought we played some great cricket. I think the way we came back from 26 for 6 was unbelievable. So I think these two factors were highlights of that tour.”
Preparation is the Key to Consistency
Shanto is a firm believer that success in Test cricket is not an accident but a product of sustained effort. The current training camp has been intense, with players who were not involved in recent white-ball squads putting in long hours to ensure they are match-ready. The captain emphasized that the team is focused on the immediate task at hand rather than looking too far ahead.
“I think we are preparing well again,” Shanto noted. “It is possible for us to win the series this time too, provided we work extremely hard over the ten days. I don’t want to look that far forward. It is important to play good cricket every day. If we can ensure that, we will have a good Test series.”
Shanto on the Art of Captaincy
Addressing the pressures of the role, Shanto admitted that he is genuinely enjoying the complexities of captaincy. For him, the job is not just about leading the team but about managing the technical aspects of the game—such as field placements and strategic bowling changes—that often decide the outcome of a match.
He acknowledged that cricket is a game of highs and lows, but he remains grounded by focusing only on what he can control. “To be very honest, I am enjoying my captaincy. I wouldn’t be in this job if I wasn’t enjoying the role. It is quite normal for a cricketer to go through a lot. It is essential to stay within what you can control; there’s no point thinking about what you can’t control,” he explained.
The Power of Experience
While the responsibility lies with him, Shanto is quick to highlight the support system surrounding him. He views the presence of senior veterans in the dressing room as one of his greatest advantages. Players like Mushfiqur Rahim, Mominul Haque, and Taijul Islam provide a wealth of wisdom that helps him make informed decisions during crunch moments of a Test match.
“There will now be new plans for the new challenges in the shape of a set of new cricketers in the opposition,” Shanto said. “I think my biggest advantage are the experienced cricketers in the side like Mushfiq bhai, Mominul bhai and Taijul bhai. They are always happy to give me inputs.”
Looking Ahead
As the series approaches, the mood in the Bangladesh camp is one of focused optimism. With a captain who balances tactical awareness with a calm, process-driven mindset, the team is hoping to build upon their previous triumphs. For Shanto, the goal is simple: maintain discipline, embrace the challenge, and continue to play the brand of cricket that has made them a formidable force in the longest format of the game.
