Bangladesh Recalls Mosaddek Hossain for Australia ODIs After Four Years

In a significant development for Bangladesh cricket, national selectors have announced the recall of experienced middle-order batter Mosaddek Hossain to the One-Day International (ODI) squad. This marks Mosaddek’s return to the international fifty-over format after a substantial four-year absence, as Bangladesh prepares to face Australia in a highly anticipated series commencing next week. The 30-year-old all-rounder is one of two key changes from the squad that last competed against New Zealand in April, with wicketkeeper-batter Nurul Hasan also making a comeback. Conversely, Mahidul Islam and Afif Hossain have been omitted from the initial squad, which has been selected for the first two matches of the series.

Mosaddek’s Resurgence: A Formidable Domestic Campaign

Mosaddek Hossain’s last appearance in an ODI was in August 2022, yet his current recall is a testament to his exceptional performances in the ongoing Dhaka Premier League (DPL) season. The all-rounder has been in sublime form, showcasing both his batting prowess and his off-spin capabilities. In just five matches in the DPL, Mosaddek has already amassed a century and two half-centuries, boasting an impressive batting average of 89. Beyond his significant contributions with the bat, he has also proven effective with the ball, claiming 11 wickets at a remarkable average of 16.27. This consistent display of all-round talent over the last three DPL seasons has made his case for national selection undeniable, positioning him as a vital asset for the Tigers’ middle-order.

Strategic Changes to Bolster the Middle-Order

The reintroduction of Mosaddek Hossain is primarily aimed at fortifying Bangladesh’s middle-order, an area that has frequently struggled to provide consistent runs in recent times. His proven ability to anchor an innings and accelerate when required, coupled with his all-round skills, offers valuable balance to the squad. Nurul Hasan, another player returning after missing the New Zealand series, is also expected to reinforce this crucial batting segment. The departures of Mahidul and Afif are seen as tactical adjustments, as they reportedly failed to deliver the required impetus in the middle overs during recent fixtures.

Chief selector Habibul Bashar elaborated on these strategic shifts: “We couldn’t provide Afif and Mahidul with a lot of opportunities. Replacing them is a tactical change. Mosaddek could bat at No. 6. He is in good form, offering more skills and all-round ability. He bowls quite well and could provide a much-needed balance for us in the middle-order.”

Bashar further explained the inclusion of Nurul Hasan: “Nurul Hasan is replacing Mahidul because the latter is predominantly a top-order batter. Nurul typically bats around No. 6 or 7 as a wicketkeeper-batter. We believe Nurul possesses the specific skills required for that position, making him a more suitable choice for the role we envision.”

Addressing Recent Batting Inconsistencies

Bangladesh’s batting unit has faced challenges in consistently performing in their last two ODI series against Pakistan and New Zealand. While Tanzid Hasan and Najmul Hossain Shanto have shown flashes of form, other key batters like Saif Hassan and Towhid Hridoy have yet to fully hit their stride in the ODI format. Captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz, despite being a successful bowler, has also seen a dip in his batting form compared to his stellar performances in 2022-23. This collective struggle underscores the urgency behind the selectors’ decision to bring in proven performers like Mosaddek and Nurul to inject stability and firepower into the middle overs.

The Bowlers’ Continued Responsibility

Given the recent batting struggles, the onus will once again heavily fall upon Bangladesh’s formidable bowling attack. Emerging talent Nahid Rana has been particularly impressive, securing five-wicket hauls in both ODIs and Tests since March, highlighting his growing influence. The pace battery features established names such as Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman, and Shoriful Islam, all of whom will be crucial in containing the Australian batting lineup. Additionally, spinner Rishad Hossain will be looking to leverage his familiarity with Australian batters, having gained valuable experience playing in the Big Bash League (BBL) last season. His insights and variations could prove pivotal in the upcoming clashes.

A Significant Bilateral Series After Fifteen Years

The ODI series between Bangladesh and Australia holds particular significance, as it marks Bangladesh’s first bilateral ODI series against Australia in fifteen years. The three-match series will be played in Mirpur on June 9, 11, and 14. Historically, Bangladesh’s only ODI victory against Australia came in a memorable 2005 tri-series match in Cardiff. This upcoming series, therefore, presents a unique opportunity for the current squad to create new history and establish their dominance on home soil against a top cricketing nation, with the revamped middle-order hoping to play a crucial role.
