Sales sails past Gloucestershire with career-best haul – James Sales Stars as Steelbacks Dominate Gloucestershire in Vitality Blast
A Masterclass at the Cinch County Ground
In a contest billed as a clash between two undefeated sides in this year’s Vitality Blast, it was Northamptonshire Steelbacks all-rounder James Sales who stole the spotlight. Producing a career-best performance with the ball, Sales dismantled the Gloucestershire batting lineup, finishing with remarkable figures of 5 for 21 to anchor a comprehensive seven-wicket victory at the cinch County Ground.
Sales Sets the Tone
The match began with Gloucestershire looking to assert dominance, but Sales had other ideas. Striking twice in the powerplay, he immediately put the visitors on the back foot. Bowling with precision—full and straight—he removed the in-form Miles Hammond and the dangerous D’Arcy Short, who had briefly threatened with an aggressive six over the leg side. By the end of the powerplay, Gloucestershire were restricted to a modest 42 for two.
Although Ben Charlesworth and Ollie Price attempted to stabilize the innings with a partnership of 47, the breakthrough always seemed imminent. Charlesworth, in particular, looked dangerous, striking the ball cleanly and sending a massive six onto the roof of the West Stand. However, Sales returned in the 12th over to deliver a decisive blow, removing both Price and Jack Taylor in the space of three balls to regain total control for the Steelbacks.
Gloucestershire’s Late Rally
Despite the damage caused by Sales, Gloucestershire’s lower order showed some resistance. Kamran Dhariwal contributed a brisk cameo before falling to the bowling of David Willey. Sales returned to complete his five-wicket haul by trapping Charlesworth lbw, ending his aggressive 49-run knock. Willey further compounded the visitors’ misery by trapping James Bracey lbw—a milestone moment that moved him into the top 20 of all-time T20 wicket-takers. Late hitting from Duan Jansen and Matt Taylor eventually pushed Gloucestershire to a total of 164 for nine, providing a modest target for the hosts.
Lynn and McSweeney Power the Chase
Chasing 165, the Steelbacks’ Australian duo of Chris Lynn and Nathan McSweeney showcased their explosive batting prowess. Lynn, living up to his reputation as a T20 powerhouse, hammered 65 off just 36 balls, including several massive sixes that traveled deep into the stands. Even after a reprieve when dropped by Short, Lynn remained relentless.
McSweeney provided the perfect foil, anchoring the innings while rotating the strike and finding boundaries with ease. The pair combined for a blistering partnership of 91 runs in just 8.4 overs, effectively taking the game away from Gloucestershire. McSweeney brought up his own half-century by crunching a straight six off Jack Taylor before falling with just nine runs required for victory.
A Clinical Finish
Ollie Price was the pick of the Gloucestershire bowlers, finishing with 2 for 28, but the target proved too small given the form of the Northamptonshire top order. With 22 balls to spare, David Willey hit the final boundary to seal the win. This victory marks a significant statement from the Steelbacks, who maintain their unbeaten record and cement their status as early contenders in the tournament. For Gloucestershire, it serves as a stark reminder of the depth and firepower within the Northamptonshire squad, as they look to regroup for their upcoming fixtures.
