IPL 2026: S Badrinath Reveals Chennai Super Kings’ Biggest Positives
Finding the Silver Linings in a Challenging Campaign
For a franchise as historically successful as the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), missing out on the Indian Premier League (IPL) playoffs is always a tough pill to swallow. The five-time champions endured a difficult IPL 2026 season, managing to secure just 6 victories from their 14 league matches. Despite the disappointing overall outcome, former India and CSK batter Subramaniam Badrinath believes the season was far from a total write-off.
Speaking on his official YouTube channel, Badrinath shared his expert analysis of the season. He pointed out that while the team struggled for consistency, several unexpected players rose to the occasion, delivering stellar performances that could define the franchise’s core in the coming years.
The Unsung Heroes in the Bowling Department
One of the most pleasing aspects of CSK’s campaign was the emergence of unexpected match-winners with the ball. Among them, English all-rounder Jamie Overton stood out as a revelation. Signed without massive fanfare, Overton quickly established himself as an indispensable part of the playing XI.
Before an unfortunate thigh injury cut his season short, Overton played 10 matches, scoring 136 runs at a rapid strike rate of nearly 160. More importantly, he became CSK’s go-to option for crucial breakthroughs, capturing 14 wickets at an impressive economy rate of under 9 runs per over.
“Jamie Overton overachieved this season,” Badrinath remarked. “Similarly, Akeal Hosein was underutilized but overachieved. Even Anshul Kamboj overachieved for the most part. No one would have predicted that he would be in the Purple Cap leaderboard anytime in the season.”
Akeal Hosein proved highly efficient in his limited opportunities, picking up 9 wickets in 7 matches while maintaining a superb economy rate of 8.16. Meanwhile, young fast bowler Anshul Kamboj enjoyed a sensational breakout season. Showing maturity beyond his years, Kamboj spearheads the bowling unit to finish as CSK’s leading wicket-taker, claiming 14 scalps across his 14 appearances.
Bright Spots in the Batting Order
While Chennai’s batting lineup lacked its usual collective clinical edge, individual brilliance kept them competitive in several fixtures. Leading from the front was Sanju Samson, who shouldered the bulk of the responsibility. Samson finished the tournament as CSK’s top run-scorer, accumulating 477 runs and anchoring the top order through turbulent periods.
Badrinath also reserved high praise for two exciting young prospects: Ayush Mhatre and Urvil Patel. Mhatre caught the eye of pundits and fans alike with his fearless, attacking approach at the top of the order. The youngster smashed 201 runs in just 6 matches at an extraordinary strike rate of 177.88 before his campaign was prematurely ended by an injury.
On the other hand, Urvil Patel showcased immense raw power. Though his high-risk style was labeled reckless by some, Badrinath views him as a genuine match-winner. Patel scored 129 runs in 7 games at a breathtaking strike rate exceeding 200.
“Samson and Mhatre were the positives with the bat,” Badrinath explained. “Urvil Patel proved he is an X-factor and worthy of his price. Though he seems to slog blindly, he gives the belief that he’ll win you a match somewhere.”
Areas of Concern: The Brevis Struggle and the Dhoni Question
Despite these individual successes, Badrinath did not shy away from addressing the major disappointments that plagued CSK’s IPL 2026 run. Chief among them was the form of South African prodigy Dewald Brevis. Highly rated and expected to dominate, Brevis struggled to find any rhythm, managing only 151 runs across eight innings.
However, Badrinath questioned whether the team management utilized him effectively. “Dewald Brevis was a massive letdown this season. CSK trusted him a lot. But the question is, though he was in bad form, was he played at the correct position?” Badrinath pondered.
Additionally, the former batsman pointed out that tactical uncertainty surrounding the iconic MS Dhoni created some instability within the camp. “The lack of clarity over MS Dhoni was another negative,” Badrinath concluded, highlighting how the franchise must resolve these leadership and role-definition issues ahead of the next cycle.
Building for the Future
While the IPL 2026 table does not make for pleasant reading for CSK loyalists, the development of domestic talents like Kamboj and Mhatre, alongside the impact of Overton, gives the management a clear template for the future. If Chennai can address their tactical inconsistencies and find the right balance in their batting order, they have all the ingredients to bounce back stronger in the next edition of the league.
