Shan Masood Lobbies to Save Pakistan Test Captaincy Amid PCB Crisis
The Crisis Deepens for Pakistan Cricket
Pakistan cricket finds itself in yet another state of intense turmoil as Test captain Shan Masood reportedly fights to salvage his leadership position. Following a disastrous tour of Bangladesh in May 2026, where Pakistan suffered a humiliating 2-0 series defeat, public anger has reached a boiling point. Despite growing demands for his removal, Masood is leaving no stone unturned behind the scenes to hold onto his job, relying on the support of influential figures within the cricket administration.
A Shocking Capitulation in Bangladesh
The latest blow to Pakistan’s Test ambitions came during their bilateral tour of Bangladesh. Having already lost 2-0 to the Tigers at home in 2024, history repeated itself in spectacular fashion in May 2026. This time, Bangladesh made full use of their home advantage to secure another dominant clean sweep.
In the first Test match held in Dhaka, Bangladesh overcame rain disruptions and fading light to clinch a tight 10-run victory. Batting first, the hosts posted a formidable total of 413, powered by a superb century from skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto and crucial half-centuries from veteran campaigners Mominul Haque and Mushfiqur Rahim. This was achieved despite a valiant five-wicket haul from Pakistan’s paceman Mohammad Abbas. In response, Pakistan’s debutant Azan Awais announced himself on the international stage with a brilliant century, supported by three other half-centurions. However, Mehidy Hasan Miraz tore through the lineup with a five-wicket haul to ensure Bangladesh maintained the upper hand. Although Bangladesh’s batting faltered slightly in the second innings—relying on fifties from Haque and Shanto before declaring—Pakistan failed to chase down the target or secure a draw as Nahid Rana ripped through the lower middle order with a devastating five-wicket haul.
The action then moved to Sylhet for the second Test, but Pakistan’s fortunes remained unchanged. Despite Khurram Shahzad and Mohammad Abbas wreaking havoc on day one, Litton Das played a magnificent rescue act, scoring a brilliant 126 runs to carry his side to 278. Pakistan’s reply was dismal, with Babar Azam top-scoring with a modest 68, and spinner Sajid Khan contributing 38 as the second-highest scorer. Taijul Islam and Nahid Rana claimed three wickets apiece to hand Bangladesh a slim lead. Bangladesh capitalized on this advantage in their second innings, as Litton Das registered a half-century and Mushfiqur Rahim scored a record-breaking hundred, setting Pakistan a monumental target of 437. Despite resilient efforts from three Pakistani batters who scored over 70 runs, Taijul Islam’s exceptional six-wicket haul sealed consecutive series wins for the Tigers.
The Statistical Nightmare of Shan Masood’s Captaincy
Following this series debacle, Bangladesh climbed to No. 5 on the World Test Championship points table, while Pakistan plummeted to a miserable No. 8 spot in the nine-team standings. The statistics paint a grim picture of Masood’s tenure as captain. Out of 16 matches under his leadership, Pakistan has suffered 12 defeats and registered only 4 victories, translating to an abysmal win percentage of just 25%.
To put this into perspective, only one captain in the history of Pakistan Test cricket has lost more matches than Shan Masood: Misbah-ul-Haq, who suffered 19 defeats. However, Misbah led the side in 56 Test matches—nearly three and a half times more than Masood. The rapid rate of defeats under Masood’s watch has alienated fans and former cricketers alike, turning him into a highly controversial figure in Pakistan’s cricket-crazy landscape.
PCB Politics and Geopolitical Distractions
Despite the immense public backlash, sources within the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and close to the captain suggest that Masood is determined to stay on. He currently enjoys the backing of key decision-makers who believe he deserves a longer run. However, any immediate decision regarding his future has been put on hold due to the preoccupation of PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi.
Naqvi, who holds the dual responsibility of serving as both the PCB Chairman and the Interior Minister of Pakistan, is currently overwhelmed by political duties. The ongoing war situation in the Middle East has reportedly demanded his full attention, leaving him with little to no time to address the structural crises plaguing Pakistan cricket.
Masood Demands Structural Reforms
While fighting to retain his captaincy, Shan Masood has reportedly made his own demands to the board. He has voiced strong concerns about the lack of stability within the team setup. A source close to the captain revealed that Masood has conveyed to the PCB that constant changes in coaching staff and team management have severely disrupted his efforts to build a cohesive and competitive Test squad. He believes that without structural stability and long-term planning, no captain can succeed.
A high-level meeting is expected to be convened soon to decide Masood’s fate. With Pakistan scheduled to face Australia in an ODI series later this month, followed by a demanding Test tour of the West Indies in August, the captaincy situation is reaching a critical juncture. The decisions made during this upcoming meeting will shape the future of Pakistan’s Test team for the foreseeable future.
