Why RCB Prioritized Table-Topping Over Chasing Against SRH: Andy Flower Explains
A Strategic Approach to the IPL 2026 Playoffs
In the high-stakes environment of the Indian Premier League, every decision matters. As the league phase concluded for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), the team faced a unique tactical dilemma against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). While the goal in any cricket match is to win, RCB’s primary objective in their final league fixture was to solidify their position at the top of the points table. Despite falling short in the chase, their calculated strategy paid off, ensuring they head into the playoffs with the distinct advantage of two opportunities to reach the final.
The Calculations Behind the Chase
Sunrisers Hyderabad posted a formidable total of 255/6, presenting a daunting challenge for the defending champions. RCB entered the game with a superior Net Run Rate (NRR) of +1.065. To secure a top-two finish, they required 166 runs, and to finish at the very top of the table, they needed to reach 171. The team eventually finished their innings at 200/4, effectively sealing their status as the league leaders.
Reflecting on the match, RCB head coach Andy Flower provided insight into the internal discussions that took place during the innings break. The coaching staff and the players were acutely aware of the various targets required to manipulate their standing on the table. “We were in a position to keep pushing to chase down 255 but ultimately we got the job done and topped the league,” Flower stated during the post-match press conference.
Balancing Victory and Positioning
The situation presented a classic conflict for the batting unit: push for an improbable win or play with the necessary control to ensure a top-two finish. According to Flower, the team wanted the batsmen to gauge the game situation and make an informed decision. While the approach drew criticism from some fans who expected a full-throttle pursuit of the 256-run target, the management prioritized the long-term benefit of the points table ranking, which offers a smoother path to the championship final.
Venkatesh Iyer’s Impressive Return
One of the bright spots for RCB was the performance of Venkatesh Iyer, who opened the innings for the first time this season. His aggressive 19-ball 41 provided the team with the initial momentum needed to keep their NRR goals well within reach. His presence at the top of the order kept RCB ahead of SRH’s early run rate, breathing life into the hope of a potential upset.
Andy Flower expressed high praise for Iyer, noting his professionalism despite spending much of the season on the sidelines. “I’ve got a lot of respect for a man that’s played a lot of IPL cricket and was sitting on the sidelines waiting for his chance,” Flower remarked. “He’s had a big smile on his face all the time. He’s practised hard every single practice session… and he’s been exemplary, to be honest.”
Moving Toward the Playoffs
While the momentum slowed in the middle overs as Rajat Patidar and Krunal Pandya opted for a more cautious approach to avoid losing wickets, the objective was achieved. By finishing at the top of the table with 18 points—level with SRH and the Gujarat Titans but boasting a superior NRR—RCB has set themselves up for a favorable run in the knockouts.
This marks only the second time in the history of the IPL that three teams have finished the league stage with the same number of points, highlighting how competitive the 2026 season has been. RCB now turns its attention to the Qualifier 1 clash against the Gujarat Titans, scheduled for Tuesday, May 26, in Dharamsala. With their top-two status secured, the team remains in a strong position to defend their title as they look ahead to the final stages of the tournament.
