The Leadership of Pat Cummins and the Rise of SRH’s Bowling Duo

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) has been one of the most exciting teams to watch in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season. Under the astute leadership of Pat Cummins, the franchise has blended aggressive batting with highly tactical bowling. While Cummins himself is celebrated globally as one of the premier fast bowlers of this generation, he has been quick to deflect the spotlight onto his younger colleagues. In a recent post-match reflection, Cummins admitted to learning valuable tactical lessons from Eshan Malinga and debutant Sakib Hussain, both of whom have emerged as the backbone of SRH’s bowling attack.

Analyzing the Numbers: Malinga and Sakib’s Phenomenal Season

The statistical impact of Eshan Malinga and Sakib Hussain this season cannot be overstated. Malinga has spearheaded the SRH bowling department, claiming the title of the team’s leading wicket-taker with an impressive haul of 19 wickets in 14 games. His ability to deliver under pressure has been matched by the sensational debut season of Sakib Hussain. Sakib has burst onto the scene with 15 wickets in just 10 matches, proving to be a highly effective wicket-taking option in the middle overs and powerplays alike.

Their combined prowess was on full display during SRH’s recent clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). Defending a mammoth total of 255 for 4, the SRH bowlers faced a daunting task on a batting-friendly surface. However, Malinga and Sakib rose to the occasion, utilizing their slower deliveries to perfection during the RCB chase. The duo completed their combined allocation of eight overs with stellar figures of 8-0-64-3. An economy rate of 8.00 on such a high-scoring ground was incredibly instrumental in securing SRH’s comfortable 55-run victory.

The Blueprint of the RCB Victory: Slower Balls and Tactical Brilliance

The match against RCB showcased the tactical maturity of both Malinga and Sakib. RCB’s chase began with a flurry of boundaries as Venkatesh Iyer provided a blazing start. Recognizing the need to break the momentum, Cummins turned to his trusted duo in the powerplay. Bowling three crucial overs during the restriction phase, Malinga and Sakib picked up a wicket each to put the brakes on RCB’s scoring rate.

It was their mastery of variations, particularly the slower ball, that prevented the RCB batters from establishing any rhythm. Speaking after the match, Cummins expressed his amazement at their skill set. “They’ve been fantastic,” Cummins remarked. “I’ve actually learned a lot off those guys as well, the way Eshan’s bowled all season, particularly in that powerplay, he’s been the form bowler of the comp, with his slower balls and he’s mixing up different things, and of course, Sakib there as well, so captain’s dream.”

The Playoff Equation: Eliminator Looming for Sunrisers Hyderabad

Despite the emphatic 55-run win over RCB, the final standings of the league stage presented a bittersweet scenario for Sunrisers Hyderabad. SRH finished the group stage tied on 18 points alongside Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans (GT). However, due to a slightly inferior Net Run Rate (NRR), SRH missed out on a top-two finish, with GT and RCB securing those coveted spots.

To leapfrog RCB into the top two, SRH needed to restrict their opponents to under 166 runs during the chase. While they fell short of that specific mathematical target, Cummins remained proud of his team’s aggressive intent on a very flat Hyderabad pitch. “It’s a pretty good wicket. I knew a lot of things had to go our way,” Cummins explained. “Yeah, it got close. I think they were trying to make sure they got to that score [166], so we threw a few different things at them, but yeah, it’s still a big win.”

With the league stage concluded, the road to the IPL 2026 trophy becomes highly competitive. Royal Challengers Bengaluru will take on Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 1 on May 26. Meanwhile, Sunrisers Hyderabad must take the longer route through the Eliminator on May 27. Their opponent will be decided from the trio of Rajasthan Royals (RR), Punjab Kings (PBKS), and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), who are currently battling for the final remaining playoff spot. With Malinga and Sakib in top form, SRH’s bowling unit looks ready for the high-pressure knockout stages.
