Vaibhav Sooryavanshi: The Rising Star Poised to Shatter Chris Gayle’s IPL Record

A New Force Emerges in the IPL

The Indian Premier League has always been a platform where talent meets opportunity, but rarely has a youngster captured the imagination of the cricketing world as quickly as Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. Representing the Rajasthan Royals, the 15-year-old batting prodigy has become the talk of the town after his explosive performance against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). In a high-stakes encounter, Sooryavanshi smashed a breathtaking 93 off just 38 balls, a knock that included ten towering sixes and seven boundaries.

The Chase for History

The significance of Sooryavanshi’s form goes beyond just a single victory. The southpaw has accumulated 53 sixes in the 19th edition of the tournament so far. He now stands just seven hits away from eclipsing Chris Gayle’s monumental record of 59 sixes in a single IPL season, set during the 2012 campaign for Royal Challengers Bengaluru. To put the magnitude of this feat into perspective, Sooryavanshi would have been just a year old when the ‘Universe Boss’ set the record that has stood unchallenged for 14 years.

Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan, who has been closely observing the youngster’s progress, believes the record is well within reach. Speaking on JioStar following the RR vs LSG match, Pathan expressed his admiration for the batter’s impact. “He is going after Gayle’s record of 59 sixes and already has hit 53 this season,” Pathan noted. “The youngster is creating the same fear that we had when bowling to Chris, and that record is facing a massive threat.”

A Turning Point for Rajasthan Royals

The victory against Lucknow was crucial for the Rajasthan Royals, who were desperate to snap a three-match losing streak. Lucknow initially set a daunting target of 220, anchored by Mitchell Marsh’s brilliant 96 off 57 balls and Josh Inglis’s blistering 60 off 29 balls. The duo provided a spectacular opening stand of 109 runs in just 50 balls, putting the Royals’ bowlers under immense pressure.

However, the response from the Royals was equally clinical. Sooryavanshi and skipper Yashasvi Jaiswal laid the foundation for the chase, putting together a 75-run opening partnership in just 39 balls. While Jaiswal contributed a brisk 43 off 23 balls, it was the partnership between Sooryavanshi and Dhruv Jurel—who remained unbeaten on 53 off 38 balls—that ultimately steered the Royals to a seven-wicket victory.

A Measured Approach to Power Hitting

Despite his aggressive style, Sooryavanshi displays a maturity that belies his age. When asked about his approach to the innings, the Bihar-based batter shared, “The wicket was looking very good when I was sitting out during the first innings. I didn’t want to rush my innings right from the start and wanted to take some time.”

His strategy was clearly intentional. By focusing on building the innings, he ensured that the pressure remained on the opposition while keeping his options open. “I wanted to build the innings because it will also help the other batters,” he added. “I can hit fours and sixes anytime during the chase, so I wanted to bat well and take the game deep.”

The Road Ahead

As the tournament progresses, all eyes will be on the young opener to see if he can maintain his explosive form and etch his name into IPL folklore. If the current trajectory is any indication, the cricketing world may be witnessing the birth of a generational talent. With his fearless approach and the backing of legends like Irfan Pathan, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is not just chasing a record—he is signaling the arrival of a new era in T20 batting.
