Chloe Ainsworth and Lucy Hamilton Secure Cricket Australia Central Contracts
A Fresh Era for Australian Women’s Cricket
Cricket Australia has officially confirmed its 18-player central contract list for the 2026-27 season. The selection process reveals a clear vision for the future, prioritizing high-potential prospects while maintaining a solid core of experienced international performers. Among the most notable updates is the inclusion of Western Australia’s Chloe Ainsworth and the rapid ascent of left-armer Lucy Hamilton.
The Rise of New Talent
Lucy Hamilton’s inclusion comes as little surprise to those who have followed her progress over the past year. After making her international debut across all three formats during the March series, Hamilton has impressed selectors with her calm, composed demeanor on the big stage. National selector Shawn Flegler noted that the youngster has taken to international cricket like a duck to water, proving she is ready to compete at the highest level.
Conversely, the selection of 20-year-old Chloe Ainsworth is an intriguing, forward-looking move. Despite not yet featuring in a senior Australian squad, her domestic performance has been undeniable. Her batting prowess in the WNCL, where she averaged 97.00 including a maiden century, combined with her consistent work in the WBBL for the Perth Scorchers, made her impossible to ignore. While she is currently recovering from a foot injury, the board views her contract as a vital investment in her long-term development.
Carey Returns to the Fold
Another significant inclusion is allrounder Nicola Carey. After declining a contract in 2023, Carey fought her way back into contention through stellar domestic and tour performances. Her recall earlier this year to face India, followed by her participation in the recent tour of the West Indies, proved she remains a key asset. Her batting, highlighted by an ODI career-best 49 in St Kitts, solidified her place in the 2026-27 squad.
Navigating Tough Decisions
The announcement also brought some difficult news for several players. Notable absences from the list include Tayla Vlaeminck and Tess Flintoff. The decision regarding Vlaeminck was particularly challenging, given her persistent injury history over the past few years. Despite being left off the contract list, Flegler emphasized that the door remains wide open for her return if she can maintain a consistent, injury-free run of domestic cricket.
“It was a really tough one with Tay,” Flegler explained. “We’ve kept her on contract for a while, but we decided it was better for her to return to state cricket and the WBBL to get consistent overs under her belt. She still has our full support, and we look forward to seeing her back at her best.”
Looking Ahead: The 2026-27 Cycle
The upcoming period is packed with high-stakes fixtures. The contracted players will be at the heart of Australia’s campaigns, including the T20 World Cup in England, white-ball series against Bangladesh and New Zealand, and tours of Sri Lanka and South Africa, the latter of which will feature a highly anticipated Test match.
For those not initially contracted, the path to the national side remains accessible through the upgrade system. Players can earn an upgrade by accruing 12 points throughout the season, with points awarded for appearances in Tests (5), ODIs (2), and T20Is (2). This structure ensures that form in the domestic circuit is rewarded and that the national team remains dynamic and competitive.
