CSK Coach Defends Ruturaj Gaikwad After Struggling Knock at Chepauk

Chennai Super Kings faced a mounting pressure at Chepauk Stadium during their crucial IPL 2026 clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, tasked with leading from the front, delivered a knock that raised eyebrows — and questions.

Ruturaj Gaikwad’s Struggles at the Top

Winning the toss and opting to bat first, Gaikwad hoped to set the tone for a dominant home performance. The early signs were promising — CSK raced to 17 runs off the first over bowled by Nitish Reddy. Sanju Samson provided explosive intent with 27 off just 13 balls, including five boundaries and a six, before his dismissal.

But from that point, momentum stalled. Gaikwad, anchoring the innings at the other end, failed to rotate the strike or find the boundary. Facing 21 deliveries, he managed only 15 runs — without a single boundary — at a strike rate of 71.43. It marked the second-lowest strike rate in IPL 2026 for any batter facing 20 or more balls, surpassed only by Arshin Kulkarni’s 70.93 against RCB in Lucknow.

Stephen Fleming Stands By the Captain

While fans voiced frustration over the sluggish start, CSK head coach Stephen Fleming took a different stance. He defended Gaikwad’s approach, emphasizing the need for a stabilizing presence at the top.

“I know it sounds old school, but we need one guy who bats through the innings. Rutu played a lot of cricket. He knows what’s needed. We trust him in that,” Fleming said, underscoring the team’s long-term vision over immediate aggression.

Yet, in a high-stakes league game, such patience from an opener is hard to justify. Gaikwad’s inability to accelerate after a strong start from Samson restricted CSK’s scoring flow, piling pressure on the middle order.

CSK’s Batting Flow Disrupted

Despite useful contributions — Urvil Patel’s quickfire sixes and Kartik Sharma’s 32 off 19 — the innings never regained its early spark. Gaikwad’s occupation of the crease without scoring freely allowed SRH’s bowlers to settle in.

Pat Cummins, in particular, capitalized. The Australian pacer claimed three key wickets: Samson, Kartik Sharma, and Gaikwad himself, turning the game in SRH’s favor. Eshan Malinga and Sakib Hussain maintained pressure with disciplined spells of slower balls and cutters.

By the 17th over, CSK were at 151/4, with Dewald Brevis and Shivam Dube holding on. A competitive total was within reach, but the lack of firepower at the top left the door open for SRH.

Ruturaj Gaikwad’s IPL 2026 Form Under Scrutiny

This innings was not an isolated incident. Gaikwad has struggled throughout the season. In 13 matches, he’s scored 321 runs at an average of 29.18, with only two half-centuries to his name. His strike rate of 120.67 — respectable in isolation — feels underwhelming given the explosive nature of modern T20 cricket.

CSK started the tournament with three straight losses, largely due to brittle top-order performances. While they’ve bounced back to 6 wins and 6 losses, standing fifth on the points table, their playoff fate remains uncertain.

What’s at Stake for CSK?

Every match is now a must-win. A loss to SRH would severely dent their qualification chances. The burden on the captain is immense — not just to score runs, but to do so with intent and leadership.

Fleming’s faith in Gaikwad’s maturity is evident. But in the unforgiving landscape of the IPL, trust must eventually deliver results.

As Chepauk fell silent during Gaikwad’s laborious knock, one thought lingered: Can experience and patience win titles in today’s game — or does cricket demand more from its leaders?

Only time, and the next match, will tell.
