Kris Srikkanth Slams Rajasthan Royals Tactics After DC Loss in IPL 2026

A Season in Freefall: Rajasthan Royals’ Tactical Meltdown

The Rajasthan Royals (RR) find themselves in a precarious position in IPL 2026. After a blistering start to the tournament that saw them win four matches on the trot, the inaugural champions have now succumbed to their third consecutive defeat, losing six of their last eight games. Their latest setback came against the Delhi Capitals (DC) on Sunday, a match that was defined more by RR’s questionable decision-making than DC’s brilliance. Former India captain Kris Srikkanth has voiced his absolute frustration, suggesting that the team management’s choices felt like they were intentionally trying to lose.

The Starc Intervention: A Middle-Order Collapse

The match began with typical fireworks from the Royals’ young sensation, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The youngster displayed no fear, dispatching world-class bowlers like Mitchell Starc and Lungi Ngidi to the boundary with ease. Sooryavanshi’s 46 off just 21 balls provided a platform that most teams would dream of. Alongside Dhruv Jurel, he stitched together a 70-run partnership that had DC on the ropes. When Jurel and captain Riyan Parag both reached their fifties, putting up 72 runs in just 7 overs, RR looked poised for a total well beyond 220.

However, the script flipped dramatically in the 15th over. Mitchell Starc, showing why he remains one of the most dangerous white-ball bowlers in the world, returned to the attack and dismantled the RR middle order. In a devastating four-ball sequence, Starc removed Parag, Donovan Ferreira, and the debutant Ravi Singh. From a comfortable 161/2, the Royals spiraled to 193/8 at the end of their 20 overs. Starc eventually finished with the Player of the Match award, adding the wicket of Dasun Shanaka in the 19th over to cap off a masterclass in death bowling.

Srikkanth’s Fury: “How Can You Not Play Jadeja?”

While the collapse on the field was jarring, Kris Srikkanth focused his critique on the selection room. Speaking on his YouTube channel, the veteran cricketer questioned the sanity of dropping a player of Ravindra Jadeja‘s caliber for an inexperienced Ravi Singh in such a high-stakes match.

“With qualification at stake, you make such a move? This match was the easiest chance for them against DC. Jadeja was a compulsory must for this match. How can you not play him in the 11? It was an absurd move,” Srikkanth fumed. He didn’t stop there, suggesting that the team’s internal chemistry might be fractured. “I am convinced there is something wrong with the team. Parag didn’t even come to receive his trophy for the maximum sixes. So there is something internally wrong within the team.”

Srikkanth was particularly perplexed by the substitution of a proven match-winner for a youngster who had yet to be tested under the IPL spotlight. “It was stupidity not playing one of Jadeja or Bishnoi. Is Ravi Singh a replacement for Jadeja? Jadeja is a gun all-rounder, and you replace him with a young batter like Ravi Singh in a crucial match. It felt like RR didn’t want to win this match. It looked like they played to lose. Parag batted brilliantly, but the will to win seems to be missing within the team.”

The Impact Player and Captaincy Blunders

The critique extended to the use of the Impact Player rule and Riyan Parag’s leadership on the field. The Royals replaced Shubham Dubey with Dasun Shanaka during their batting innings, a move Srikkanth labeled as “stupid.” Shanaka struggled to make an impact, scoring 10 runs off 8 balls and later conceding 29 runs in three overs with the ball.

“You are already a bowler short without Jadeja, and you bring in Shanaka just for the death overs. Archer himself could have done what Shanaka did. Shanaka did nothing with the bat or ball. He just got one fluke wicket of KL Rahul,” Srikkanth added.

The boiling point came in the 18th over of DC’s chase. With Delhi needing 35 runs from 18 balls and left-handers Axar Patel and David Miller at the crease, Parag opted to bowl the part-time off-spinner Donovan Ferreira. The gamble backfired spectacularly as Ferreira leaked 16 runs. Srikkanth was incensed by Parag’s reaction following the over. “He’s bowling that over because of two left-handers. Is he even an actual off-spinner? Shanaka should have bowled instead. After he gave 16 runs, Parag is throwing his cap as if it’s someone else’s fault. You captained foolishly. Why are you throwing your cap towards him?”

The Playoff Math: A Mountain to Climb

Despite the chase starting strongly with fifties from Abhishek Porel and KL Rahul, DC’s middle order nearly fumbled the game. It took a composed stand from Axar Patel and a late-game cameo from Ashutosh Sharma to secure the win for the Capitals. For Rajasthan, the path to the playoffs has now become a mathematical nightmare.

Currently sitting on 12 points after 12 matches, the Royals find themselves in a ‘must-win’ territory. To guarantee a spot, or at least keep their hopes alive, they must win both their remaining fixtures:

  • May 19: vs Lucknow Super Giants in Jaipur
  • May 24: vs Mumbai Indians in Mumbai

Even with two wins, RR will be at the mercy of other results and Net Run Rate. A single loss in the upcoming week will likely result in their elimination, a shocking outcome for a team that looked like the dominant force of the tournament just a few weeks ago. As the pressure mounts, the rumored internal rifts and tactical inconsistencies must be addressed immediately if the Royals hope to turn their fortunes around.
