Habibul Bashar: Bangladesh Ready to Challenge Australia in Test Cricket

Ronav Desai · · 3 min read

Bangladesh’s Test team is riding a wave of confidence, widely regarded as the most consistent and determined side the nation has ever produced. As they prepare for a historic two-match series in Australia — part of the ICC World Test Championship — the challenge ahead is enormous. But according to chief selector Habibul Bashar, the key to success isn’t reinvention. It’s simplicity.

Australia Takes Bangladesh Seriously

The magnitude of this series is evident in how Australia is responding. Some of their top players have skipped high-profile franchise leagues like The Hundred, while others have stepped away from white-ball cricket to focus solely on the upcoming Test battles. This level of respect underscores Bangladesh’s growing reputation in the longest format.

Yet, playing in Australia has always been a daunting prospect for subcontinental teams. The pace-friendly pitches, aggressive bowling attacks, and vast outfield conditions are worlds apart from what Bangladesh typically encounters at home.

Preparation Over Panic

Bashar acknowledges the difficulty of the task but emphasizes preparation over panic. “It would be very good if we can go there a bit earlier,” he said. “That will help us adjust to the conditions better. And honestly, every Test team is strong now. Pakistan are also a very good Test side. Except for maybe the teams near the bottom of the rankings, the teams within the top six or seven are all very competitive. Playing Test cricket against any of them is a huge challenge.”

No Need for Extraordinary Measures

Despite Australia’s reputation as one of the most formidable sides in world cricket — especially on home soil — Bashar remains grounded. He doesn’t believe Bangladesh needs to overhaul their approach or adopt radical strategies.

“Australia are probably the number one team right now. Playing against them in their own conditions is always more challenging. But it’s not like we’ve never played Australia before, or never faced these bowlers or this kind of opposition. We don’t need to do anything special. If we can simply play our best cricket, I believe we can challenge Australia.”

Confidence Rooted in Growth

This mindset reflects a broader shift in Bangladesh cricket. No longer seen as underdogs by default, the Tigers are now viewed as a balanced, resilient side capable of competing across conditions. Their recent performances have earned them respect, and the upcoming tour is a chance to cement their status.

The experience of playing in seaming-friendly conditions, adapting to faster grounds, and facing high-quality fast bowling could prove invaluable — not just for this series, but for their long-term development in Test cricket.

Focus on Fundamentals

Instead of chasing quick fixes, Bashar’s philosophy centers on preparation, exposure, and sticking to proven processes. Early arrival, proper acclimatization, and trust in their existing skill sets are the cornerstones of the plan.

“We don’t need to do anything special” isn’t a statement of complacency — it’s a declaration of confidence. Bangladesh believes they belong.

As the Test series approaches, all eyes will be on how well they execute their game plan. If they play to their potential, the results may speak for themselves.
