Glamorgan Set the Pace in Birmingham

Glamorgan has laid a formidable foundation in their quest for a third consecutive Rothesay County Championship victory. Despite the interruptions caused by persistent rain at Edgbaston, the visitors managed to assert their dominance over Warwickshire on a gripping second day of play.

Glamorgan’s First Innings Recovery

The day began with Glamorgan looking to capitalize on their overnight score of 341 for 8. Having recovered impressively from the dire start of 0 for 2, the visitors finished their first innings at 360. A significant part of this recovery was due to the batting masterclass from Kellaway (139) and Carlson (85).

For Warwickshire, Oliver Hannon-Dalby continued his stellar form since returning from a loan spell at Worcestershire. Hannon-Dalby claimed the final two wickets to fall, finishing with impressive figures of 5 for 53. He ended the partnership between Mason Crane and Tom Norton, which had added a valuable 46 runs, and subsequently cleaned up the tail by bowling Ryan Hadley.

Warwickshire Under Fire

Following a two-hour delay caused by inclement weather, Warwickshire commenced their reply under heavy, overcast skies. These conditions proved perfect for the Glamorgan seamers, who immediately put the home side under intense pressure.

Openers Alex Davies and Rob Yates showed initial resolve, putting on 27 runs, but the breakthrough came when Zain-ul-Hassan trapped Yates lbw with a sharp inswinger. Zain-ul-Hassan remained in the thick of the action throughout the afternoon, finishing with 2 for 41. Although Davies managed to find the boundary in the Hollies Stand, his innings was cut short when he hit a delivery from Zain straight into the hands of Sean Dickson at gully.

Top Order Collapse

Warwickshire’s middle order struggled to combat the disciplined line and length of the Glamorgan attack. Dan Mousley and Sam Hain attempted to stabilize the ship, contributing 35 runs in ten overs, but both fell to lapses in concentration. Mousley was clean-bowled by an excellent delivery from 18-year-old Tom Norton, while Hain was dismissed lbw by Timm van der Gugten.

As the light faded and further rain loomed, Glamorgan’s bowlers remained relentless. Van der Gugten picked up his second wicket by trapping Ed Barnard lbw, and Ryan Hadley joined the party by finding the edge of Zen Malik’s bat, which was safely gathered at second slip. By the time rain forced an early close, Warwickshire had been reduced to 123 for 6, trailing by a significant margin.

Looking Ahead to Day Three

The Glamorgan seamers will be eager to return on the third morning to finish off the Warwickshire lower order. Timm van der Gugten, who ended the day with figures of 2 for 21, will be looking to build on his momentum. Meanwhile, young Tom Norton, making only his second Championship appearance, will be keen to add to his tally. Interestingly, the youngster finds himself in the unusual position of being in danger of failing to take a hat-trick in a first-class match for the first time in his professional career—a testament to his incredible start at the senior level.

With only 25 overs lost to the weather, Glamorgan remains in a commanding position. The side will look to press home their advantage as soon as play resumes, hoping to secure the points necessary to continue their impressive run in the County Championship.
